The Durban’s Super Giants toppled Paarl Royals in their high-scoring affair at the Kingsmead Cricket Ground. The win granted them further two points as they climb their way up the SA20 2023 points table.

Klaasen, de Kock break Royals with sparkling half-centuries

Super Giants skipper Quinton de Kock’s decision to bat first was backed by his openers Kyle Mayers and Wiaan Mulder, as the two peppered the Royals field throughout the entirety of the opening powerplay. The two opening batters staged 62 runs within the first six overs, before de Kock took over and whacked a 31-ball 57 in the middle.

Heinrich Klaasen piled on the Royals’ pain, as the right-hander clubbed six sixes in his 19-ball unbeaten stay at the crease. The cricketer struck a thunderous fifty and powered Giants total from 190 to 216 in the final over of the innings.

Topley strangles Royals while Morgan’s lone rebellion halted by a runout

The Paarl Royals lost their top four within the first eight overs of their response. Opener Jason Roy failed to capitalise on his start while Jos Buttler and captain David Miller never got going in the run-chase.

Up against the wall at 63-4, Eoin Morgan staged 114 runs with partner Dane Vilas off the next 60 deliveries of the Royals innings. Morgan himself clubbed a six-laden 37-ball 64 and was threatening to pull off a sensational heist, until a runout halted his run-chase rebellion.

Morgan’s dismissal shattered Royals’ response and they eventually fell 27 runs of their task.

Super Giants’ English import Reece Topley inflicted the most damage with the ball, as he snared three key wickets off his four overs.

The 27-run win helped the Durban’s Super Giants to strengthen their grip in the tournament, as they occupy the third spot on the points table. The Royals remain at four as they succumb to another defeat, their second in three games this season.
