Just when the IPL 2025 playoff race is heating up, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has added some drama of its own. With their upcoming white-ball home series against West Indies beginning May 29, England have announced their ODI and T20I squads and six of those players are part of IPL teams.

England’s IPL Contingent Called Up

The IPL 2025 final is now scheduled for June 3, the exact same day as the third and final ODI between England and West Indies. That’s a direct clash. So what will happen when England’s national duties will overlap with the IPL.

The ECB’s white-ball squads for the West Indies series include six players involved in the IPL:

  • ODI Squad: Jos Buttler (Gujarat Titans), Jacob Bethell (Royal Challengers Bengaluru), Will Jacks (Mumbai Indians), Jamie Overton (Chennai Super Kings), Jofra Archer (Rajasthan Royals)
  • T20I Squad: Phil Salt (RCB)

Two of these players, Archer and Overton, are free to play for England. Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings are out of the playoff race, so the road is clear for both to join England’s camp early.

But the same can’t be said for the other four and this is where the real dilemma begins.

The Buttler-Bethell-Jacks Conundrum

Jos Buttler, Jacob Bethell and Will Jacks are all playing key roles for their respective franchises. Gujarat Titans, RCB, and Mumbai Indians are right in the playoff mix, and it’s very likely that all three teams could feature in the knockouts starting May 28.

Now, the original IPL schedule was supposed to wrap up by May 25, and the ECB had granted NOCs (No Objection Certificates) to players based on that timeline. But the unexpected pause in the tournament triggered by cross-border tensions between India and Pakistan has stretched the IPL until June 3.

With the third ODI set for the same day, it puts Buttler, Bethell, and Jacks in a tight spot. Do they leave their franchises mid-knockout to report for England duty? Or do they finish their IPL commitments and potentially miss part of the series?

This decision won’t be easy, especially with the IPL reportedly enforcing two-year bans for players who walk out mid-season without a valid reason. That policy already bit Harry Brook, who withdrew from IPL 2025 pre-season and has been slapped with a two-year IPL ban.

Phil Salt Gets The Green Light For RCB

In contrast, Phil Salt, one of RCB’s standout performers this season, has only been named in the T20I squad, not the ODIs. That works perfectly for Bengaluru. The T20I series kicks off June 6, three days after the IPL final, giving Salt a free pass to play the league right till the end.

It’s also worth noting that Liam Livingstone, who has had a disappointing run, has been dropped from both squads, making him available for RCB as well. So, while the likes of MI, GT have a puzzle on their hands, Bengaluru fans can breathe easy for now.
