South African players who might miss remainder IPL 2025 [Source: @ProteasMenCSA/x.com]
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) recently announced that the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 will resume on May 17. The first match after the break will see Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) take on Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.
Why Are South African Players Leaving IPL?
Cricket South Africa (CSA) has named their squad for the World Test Championship (WTC) Final 2025 against Australia, which will be held at Lord’s from June 11 to 15. Since the IPL 2025 now ends on June 3 (due to the India-Pakistan tension), there’s a conflict between international duties and IPL commitments.
Earlier, South African players were given NOCs (No Objection Certificates) to play in the IPL until May 25. However, since the tournament has been extended, players now need fresh NOCs to continue playing beyond this date.
Since international matches resume soon after May 25, it’s uncertain whether the South African cricket board will allow players to stay in India for the remainder of the IPL. Missing an ICC trophy opportunity (like the WTC Final) is a bigger issue than missing a franchise tournament, so the priority seems clear.
The WTC Final is just 8 days after the IPL Final. Some SA players, like Lungi Ngidi (playing for RCB), have returned to India after a brief break, but it’s unclear how long they will stay. The situation remains complicated since 8 players from the WTC Final squad are still active in IPL, and 7 of them are playing for teams that can still make the playoffs.
South African Players In IPL 2025 & WTC Final 2025
- Mumbai Indians: Corbin Bosch and Ryan Rickelton
- Gujarat Titans: Kagiso Rabada
- Delhi Capitals: Tristan Stubbs
- Lucknow Super Giants: Aiden Markram

CSA hasn’t officially stated whether these players will return to the IPL or stay till the end. However, they did mention that all players selected for the WTC Final will assemble in England on May 31. The non-IPL players will depart from South Africa on May 30.
