The much-awaited Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2023 is just around the corner with Australia announcing a spin-heavy 18-man squad for their tour of India next month, with Pat Cummins continuing to lead the side. Cummins, who has lost one Test since taking over as Australia's red-ball captain, is drawing inspiration from the 2004 Adam Gilchrist-led side that won a monumental series in India 2-1.

As a precursor to India, Australia toured Pakistan and Sri Lanka in 2022, having won the series 1-0 against the former and drawing the series against the latter.

Speaking in the 'The Test' documentary, the pacer indulged in tactics about how to bowl in subcontinental conditions that offer nothing to new-ball bowlers.

Here's what Cummins said

“They won in India, they won in England. “That Test team (of 2004), no matter where they (went) in the world, they could adapt. That’s the gold standard. That’s what you aspire to.

In Australia, you keep the field in with the new ball, try and make the most of it. In the subcontinent, it’s the opposite. The new ball does nothing, so you put the field out to stop the ball just pinging off the bat and then you hope it starts reversing. Then you sense an opportunity, and that’s when you go ‘voom’,"

The first Test between India and Australia gets underway on February 9 at Nagpur.
