The final round of 2022 County Championship Division One commenced on Monday, September 26 with five matches across England. After the opening day of action, here is a look at the highlights from each of those five fixtures.


Kent vs Somerset

The visiting Somerset side lost nine wickets on a rain-curtailed opening day at Canterbury. Tom Abell and co. reached 195-9 by stumps, with unbeaten batsman Lewis Goldsworthy amounting 93 of those runs.

Kent’s new ball pace duo Matt Quinn and Nathan Gilchrist claimed eight of the nine wickets to fall on the day, with the latter picking up a remarkable five-fer off just his 18.3 overs.

Yorkshire vs Gloucestershire

Gloucestershire wicketkeeper James Bracey struck 71 out of his side’s 190-run first innings total on Day 1. Yorkshire’s Matthew Fisher inflicted the most damage to the visitors through his hostile four-fer with the new ball.

Later, the hosts wiped out 80 runs from their deficit and are now trailing the Gloucestershire by another 110.

Warwickshire vs Hampshire

Hosts Warwickshire hammered 138-2 on a rain-curtailed opening day at Birmingham. Dom Sibley cracked a half-century while opener Rob Yates will resume his side’s crusade on Day 2 at 77*.

Hampshire’s Ian Holland picked up both wickets that fell on the day through his nine-over spell.

Lancashire vs Surrey

Lancashire batters made the most of their home conditions in Manchester to steamroll the Surrey attack on Day 1. They reached 414-5 by stumps, with opener Keaton Jennings still unbeaten at the crease and nearing a well-deserved double ton.

Steven Croft also compiled 86 while George Balderson will resume his innings at 53* on Day 2 alongside Jennings.

Northamptonshire vs Essex

Essex lost eight wickets to hosts Northamptonshire on Day 1 at Northampton. The Tom Westley-led side faced 70 overs to reach 220, with the skipper himself scoring 55 of those runs. He, alongside Ben Allison (37*), will resume action on Day 2.

For Northamptonshire, Tom Taylor collected three wickets while new-ball pacers Ben Sanderson and Jack White claimed two each.
