Establishing their dominance over the fifty-over format, India’s openers Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan have become the seventh most successful batting pair in the history of One-Day cricket. The duo achieved the feat with a 100-run partnership in the third ODI of the series against England.
They have added more than 5,000 runs in partnerships in ODIs and is only the second pair after the iconic opening pair of Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly who had amassed as many as 8,227 runs in their partnerships.
The pair of Tendulkar-Ganguly sits at the top of the pile in terms of runs scored by a batting pair and there is no pair close to them.
The list of most successful batting pairs is dominated by top-order batsmen, more so by Sri Lankan batsmen.
The second most successful pair in ODIs is between Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene who has had 5,992 runs, followed by the partnership of Tillakaratne Dilshan and Sangakkara which accumulated 5,475 runs. They are closely followed by the partnership between Marvan Atapattu and Sanath Jayasuriya who amassed 5,462 runs.
The next two successful partnerships have been between Australian openers Adam Gilchrist and Mathew Hayden and Desmond Haynes and Gordon Greenidge.
