image-ldes41lwIndia vs New Zealand (Source: AP Newsroom) [Refresh for latest updates...

10:43 PM IST | Probuddha: So, that is it from the Live Blog of the 1st T20I between India and New Zealand. India will look to bounce back in the series with a win in the next match. We will bring you all the live updates throughout the series. Stay tuned with us. This is Probuddha Bhattacharjee signing off on behalf of Arnav Chopra. Good Night!! and Good BYE!!

Player of the Match: Daryl Mitchell

Arnav: Not the day Hardik would have hoped for! Surely, won't be easy to digest but we all know they would come back stronger!

Shakir: What about that bowling spell from Mitch Santner!? He bowled his 4 overs for 11/2 and not to forget that includes a maiden over against Surya. The Blackcaps captain is the Man of the Match for this T20I!!

Shakir: Arshdeep Singh has to solve his issue with the tramline. It could cost him and India huge someday. He has been bowling no-balls on a consistent basis in the last few fixtures!!

image-ldes8ch7New Zealand win the match by 21 runs and take a 1-0 lead in the T20I series (Source: OneCricket

10:41 PM IST| Arijit: A comprehensive victory for New Zealand and in the end the expensive last over from Asrshdeep Singh yielded out to be one of the differences. The good thing for the Kiwis is that they start the series with a win, which they failed to earn during the recently concluded ODI series.

Arriving for a chase of 177 runs, the Indian side didn't get the rosy start they desired. Ishan Kishan was the first one to depart and Michael Bracewell enforced a jaffa to knock the former's off stump. Rahul Tripathi followed him without disturbing the scorers as an outswinger from Jacob Duffy edged his outside part of the bat. They were curtailed to 15-3 after 3.1 overs.

Soon, Surya and Hardik Pandya maneuvered the ground well and kept the scoreboard ticking. With time, they executed some amazing boundaries and glued 68 runs together. As soon as Surya was removed, India's hopes of a triumph got narrowed. Yadav was dismissed for 47 off 34 balls. Hardik Pandya, Deepak Hooda, and others followed the pavilion. In the end, it was Washington Sundar who seemed to be the lone warrior of India. He failed to gain support from the other end as wickets kept on tumbling. Sundar smacked some splendid-looking shots and raced up to his half-century as well.

Earlier, India had won the toss and elected to bat first. New Zealand kickstarted with the usual opening duo of the Wellington Firebirds' - Finn Allen and Devon Conway. Allen gave a rollicking start to New Zealand, whacking a couple of boundaries. They were scoring around 10 runs per over but Washington Sundar came in and extracted two wickets.

Devon Conway was the one who shepherded the innings from one end. Glenn Phillips failed to get along well and later the cricketing audience was treated with 'THE DARYL MITCHELL SHOW'. India had almost pushed the brakes but Mitchell had some other plans. He accelerated really well and went on to smoke 59* runs off 30 balls. He harrumphed three consecutive sixes against Arshdeep Singh at the ultimate over of the innings and helped his side to post 176 runs.

In the end, the Black Caps wins the game by 21 runs and lead the three-match series 1-0.

Washington Sundar is being lauded for his outstanding batting effort in a losing cause.

Shakir: I believe it was Arshdeep's last over that switched the momentum in the Kiwis favour and from there on it was mostly one-way traffic. The scorecard does not suggest but it was indeed a one-sided affair for the most part as the Indians kept knocking on the door but couldn't break it past the Kiwis spin attack!!

10:28 PM IST | Probuddha: Umran gets a four off the outside edge in the last delivery of the innings. But India have failed to deliver a impressive performance in the first T20I. They lost the match here by 21 runs and are trailing in the series by 1-0.

10:27 PM IST| Probuddha:  Washington Sundar scoops the ball over third man bit fails to time it properly. And his decent knock comes to an end.

Shakir: I will like to highlight a point that I don't think is said much. INDIA are not that good against QUALITY SPIN as they used to be!! Whenever we have had to face some quality spin on challenging tracks, we have faultered and so was the case today.

10:26 PM IST | Probuddha: Fifty up for Sundar off 25 balls.

10:24 PM IST: So, we are down to the final over and India need almost 5.5 runs per ball. Pretty much sums up the day with bat!

10:19 PM IST: Sunder in no mood to give up!

Sunder slams 6,4,4  in the 19th over! 36 needed off 9.

10:18 PM IST: WICKET Maiden Over!!!

Some stuff that from Ferguson!! Delivers a wicket maiden 18th over. Game now in the bag for the Kiwis!

10:14 PM IST: GONEEE!!!

Kuldeep departs. Edges it to the keeper and adds to India's woes! Ferguson gets the breakthrough. INDIA: 127/8 (17.1 Overs)

10:13 PM IST: That's a shot!

Sundar hooks the short delivery from Tickner for six! Much needed for India. Needs more of these.

Ishan Kishan in the last 5 T20Is:

  • 4 vs New Zealand
  • 1 vs Sri Lanka
  • 2 vs Sri Lanka
  • 37 vs Sri Lanka
  • 10 vs New Zealand

10:08 PM IST: Last thing India wanted! RUN OUT!!

Shivam Mavi is runout. Was running casually and found short of his crease in the end. Mitchell "the Wonder" Santner with an outstanding throw direct on the stumps!!

Arnav: Absolutely! No way they could have done it without him.

Shakir: The kiwi spinners have done it yet again. They have always seemed to have better of the Indian batters on spinning tracks. Shades of the 2016 World Cup match at Nagpur!!

10:04 PM IST | Probuddha: GONNE!!!!!! This time it is Deepak Hooda!!!! Good length ball on the off stump. Hood steps down the track and tries to go over the extra cover region. Conway dislodges the bails before Hooda could get back into the crease. New Zealand surely have this under their control.

image-ldeque2dScore after 15 overs (Source: OneCricket)

Shakir: India need 67 off 30 balls. It is not going to be easy. Hooda-Washy have the capability but can they finish this for India? The ball is sticking in the pitch and the run-rate is up to 13 now!!

Arnav: Did NZ had some bun and butter today? Seems like they had. Second catch dropped! We don't see that very often.

10:01 PM IST | Probuddha: One more DROP!!!! This time it is Deepak Hooda. Is New Zealand crumbling under pressure??!!!!

10:00 PM IST | Probuddha: 100 up for India!!! 77 needed off 35 balls now.

9:57 PM IST | Probuddha: DROPPED!!!!! Short ball on off stump. Sundar looks to pull the ball but gets a top edge behind the stumps. But the wicket keeper fails to hold on.

Arnav: New Zealand is spinning the web now!! Wait! I have seen this one! This is a classic!! (T20 World Cup 2016 IND vs NZ)

9:50 PM IST | Probuddha: ONE MORE DOWN!!!!! India is falling apart completely. This time it is the skipper Hardik Pandya. Good length ball on the off stump and Pandya looks to go over long-on. But all he manages is a top-edge to be caught by Michael Bracewell.

9:47 PM IST | Probuddha: FOUR!!!! First ball he faces under pressure and Washington reverse sweeps it for an 'ATIIII SUNDAR' four.

9:46 PM IST | Probuddha: WICKET!!!!! SKY DEPARTS!!!!! Good length ball on the middle stump. Surya lifts the ball over the in-field but holds out in the deep. India once again falling off the chase.

Shakir: The run-rate is almost 11 and half and it seems to be getting away from India. But with two of the most experienced campaigners in the middle it is far from over!!

RECORD ALERT: Suryakumar Yadav goes past MS Dhoni and becomes the fifth highest run-scorer in T20Is for India.

OC Fact: Arshdeep Singh's 27 run final over is the most by an Indian bowler in T20I history

Arnav: The debate isn't over yet!! Shubman vs Prithvi!!

Drinks Break!! 10 overs done! INDIA: 74/3

image-ldepyokcSource: OneCricket

09:35 PM IST: Tickner ticked away twice ✅

SKY in no mood to stop as he takes Blair Tickner to the ropes for two consecutive boundaries. Men in Blue need more of this, certainly!!

Milestone Alert: Suryakumar Yadav needed 40 runs before the start of this innings to get past MS Dhoni and become 5th highest run scorer for India in T20Is!!

09:29 PM IST: Decision sent upstairs!

Surya tries to reverse the Ish Sodhi delivery, misses it and gets hit on the pads. Umpire isn't convinced! Impact is Umpires call and so is wickets! Saved!!!

09:25 PM IST: Hardik Swagat hai aapka!!!

Skipper slams a mighty blow over cow corner for six. Now, can he continue the run? And India reaches 50.

Shakir: India need a move on here. The run rate is creeping up to 11 and with three quality spinners in their squad the Kiwis will fancy themselves as favorites at this moment!!

OC Fact: The sixth over that Surya played as a maiden is the first maiden that Surya has played in his T20 career (International + IPL)

09:19 PM IST: Required Run Rate jumps over 10!!! Trouble incoming??

image-ldep8ablSource: OneCricket

Shakir: I can't wait to see the battle between this duo and Ish Sodhi on this track. I believe it could be a decisive battle in this match.

Arnav: India needs someone to stand with Surya at the other end..  Do you know someone who could come in at this stage and bat till the end??? (HINT: Watch below 😉!!!)

09:11 PM IST: SKY makes his presence felt

He flicks it off his thighs to deep fine leg for a massive SIXXX! CLASSIC SURYA!! He doesn't holds himself back.

Arnav: So, Dew isn't here for sure! Don't think it would be coming anytime soon.

image-ldeovuelSource: OneCricket

09:06 PM IST: India lose another!

That's nightmare! Shubman Gill departs! It was a loosener from Santner and too lazy to keep it down. Edges it up in the air and caught by Finn Allen to end the starman's innings for 7.

Shakir: This is terrific bowling from Duffy. He is swinging the ball like a banana. He went for 100 in the last ODI and has turned up in this T20I fixture just alright!

Surya is in!!

09:04 PM IST: 3 overs done. India- 15/2

09:02 PM IST:  Appeal for caught behind!

Rahul Tripathi has edged it and Duffy gets the breakthrough. New Zealand are on fire as they get the 2 down for 11.

Something gotta give here. Tripathi has played 5 balls without a run.

Shakir: I am excited to see Rahul Tripathi in this Indian setup. Let's see how it goes here. He is someone whom all back to do well.

08:56 PM IST: Bracewell rips through Kishan!

What an outstanding delivery from Michael Bracewell to clean the off-stump of Kishan. And that straight! He missed the ball completely! Bat nowhere near the ball. Grips and turns miles!! WOW! That was something! Game on! Spinners are in!

Prithvi Shaw might not be playing today but here is what he said on his comeback....

08:50 PM IST: The chase is on! Shubman Gill takes the strike with Ishan Kishan at the other end, Jacob Duffy has the new ball.

Arnav: The Super Soppers are on the field. Atleast they are trying to dry off something. Maybe trying to neglect any form of dew

Shakir: I said at the power-play stage that NZ will need at least 180+ and NZ have come very close to that total. I am with you on this Probuddha, all will depend on the start that India get. Especially their approach in the powerplay.

image-ldeo5np2Mid Innings Score (Source: OneCricket)

Arnav: Not at all. Looks under par on this kind of a wicket to be honest as it will only aid the batters now unless pitch starts to turn miles!

Probuddha: I think they have a done a good enough job to give India a tough fight. A lot will depend on how India starts off their chase.

Shakir: Nice comeback from Arshdeep to close the second half of the over and restrict NZ on 176-6. What do you think guys, is this total enough?

08:40 PM IST: Akshay Bhide: That’s the end of the first innings. New Zealand finish their innings on 176/6, thanks to fifties from Devon Conway and Daryl Mitchell. Mitchell scored 27 runs in the last over as it has powered the Kiwis to a very good total. New Zealand carry the momentum heading into the innings break and will be happier with their effort with the bat.

After being asked to bat first, New Zealand got off to a brilliant start, thanks to Finn Allen. He did the bulk of scoring in the powerplay as he took on the Indian bowling upfront. He was looking good until Washington Sundar dismissed him on 35. Mark Chapman walked out to bat at three and departed without troubling the scorers, courtesy of a one-handed stunning catch from Sundar. Glenn Phillips joined Devon Conway and led the recovery work. The spinners plugged the scoring rate in the middle overs.

Conway was going nicely from one end but Phillips struggled at the other end and was dismissed by Kuldeep Yadav on 17 in the 13th over. There was no stopping Conway at the other end as he played some beautiful strokes and brought up his fifty. He was well-supported by Daryl Mitchell from the other end. With the slog overs approaching, Conway holed out in the deep on 52 while trying to up the ante.

Daryl Mitchell teed off in the end as he smashed Arshdeep for 27 in the last over of the innings which helped New Zealand post 176 on the board. India picked up six wickets in total. Washington Sundar bowled beautifully and finished with figures of 2/22 in his four overs. The pacers went on a journey tonight whereas the spinners did a fine job to keep the lid on the scoring rate. It won't be easy do defend as we may see the dew settling on the outfield. Let's see how both sides respond. Don't go anywhere as India's chase begins shortly.

Kiwis end their innings on 176!

In a hard-fighting effort, Devon Conway and Daryl Mitchell steered t

Shakir: Arshdeep is under the pump here. He has conceded 19 off 2 balls. Was I a bit too early to call off this innings!? NZ look on course for 180+!!

Mitchell gets to half-century too

Now Arshdeep bowled a no ball. It was thumped for a six and guess what, the next ball too. Infact, the third one toooo! That made it three sixes from two deliveries. Gets his marvellous half-century in some style!

Arnav: No Balls and India! That's some history!

Shakir: Kiwis seem 15-25 short of the PAR score here. They have not been able to accelerate at the fag end of the innings. Can they challenge the Indian batting attack with this score?

8:32 PM IST | Probuddha: IN THE AIR AND TAKEN!!!!!! Mavi strikes!!! Short ball at the body of the batter. Mitchell Santner looks to hook the ball but gets the top edge to deep mid-wicket as a catch is being taken by Rahul Tripathi.

The hometown hero is out there in the stadium.

OC Fact: The grass has been trimmed down too short here as it won't allow the dew to settle in! Something we haven't seen before.

8:25 PM IST | Probuddha: Stunning THROW!!!!! Good length ball on the off stump dabbed towards the third man. The batters set off for a quick single, but Ishan Kishan was quick to collect the ball and uproot the stumps on the direct hit. The replays show that the batter was the short of the crease.

Shakir: An impressive innings from Conway comes to an end. He tackled the spinners well and was harsh on quick bowlers like Umran and Mavi. He makes way for Bracewell, which will not make NZ much disappointed.

8:21 PM IST | Probuddha: WICKET!!!!!! Slower and full ball on off stump. Conway leans onto the ball and lofts it over mid-off. But the timing was not perfect and he holds out at long-off.

image-lden4s3eFifty for Devon Conway (Source: OneCricket)

Probuddha: Since we are at Ranchi, the craze around MSD is a must!!!!

50 up for Conway

A fine fine inning by the Southpaw on a turning track against some tough balls. He has been the shining star for the BlackCaps on this tour.

Another Review by India

This is another close call. Mitchell misses Sundar's delivery gets trapped on the pads. NO Bat involved. Ohhhh!!! Everything was red except for the Stumps which got umpire's call. However, will remain that way as the decision is upheld. He is saved by a whisker and the disappointment is clear on the faces of Indian players.

Interesting Trivia: As per the decided schedule, this T20I series is the last T20I series that India will be playing this year!!

INDIA REVIEW

Mitchell was trying to reverse sweep on Kuldeep' delivery. However, he missed the ball which bounces of his arms to move up in the air and ultimately gets caught by Ishan, who is the wicketkeeper. Ultraedge shows nothing off the bat and ball tracking shows outside off-stump. He's saved.

image-ldemnvps

Arnav: 14 Overs down! And the Kiwis have recovered well after an early hiccup.

Shakir: It certainly is showing in the way he has been playing spin that his CSK experience is helping him play a gem here today!

8:02 PM IST | Probuddha: Shakir what do you think is the MSD effect working on Conway today?

Shakir: Phillips misery at the crease comes to an end. He never looked comfortable in front of the Indian spin attack and he slogs one to Surya at the deep mid-wicket  boundary. Kuldeep gets his man!!

7:59 PM IST | Probuddha: Wicket!!!!! The third one down. Wrong one on the good length around the middle stump. Phillips looks to go over the square leg region but he fails to connect and once again SKY was waiting in the deep to complete the catch. So Phillips goes after scoring 17 off 22 balls.

7:58 PM IST| Probuddha: 100 comes up for New Zealand in 12.3 overs.

7:55 PM IST| Probuddha: The New Zealand batters are once again finding their rhythm here. The fifty partnership up here between Conway and Phillips. The duo took 43 balls to bring up the half-century partnership.

Probuddha: The Indian spinner have put the brakes on the scoring rate.

image-ldem5e2nScore after 10 overs (Source: OneCricket)

7:48 PM IST| Probuddha: That ends the first half of the New Zealand innings. Both the teams will be pretty content with the proceedings here. New Zealand have scored 79 runs for the loss of two wickets. From here on India will try and restrict the Black Caps below 180 runs. The game is poised on an exciting stage at the present moment.

Shakir: This is a very important partnership for NZ. They need to put up 180+ on the board to have a fighting chance especially taking due in account.

OC Fact: Kuldeep Yadav is playing a T20I match after 5 months. He played his last match against West Indies in Aug 2022 and picked up 12/3.

Probuddha: Kuldeep Yadav is into the attack.

Shakir: Umran is bowling fast and Conway is sending him even faster from the bat!! 4,4,6 of consecutive balls!!

7.2 Over : 149 KMPH!!!!!! Umran Malik is trying to break the speed-o-meter!!!!

image-ldelj2p4Score at the end of the Powerplay (Source: OneCricket)

7:32 PM IST| Probuddha: The end of Powerplay. New Zealand were off to a blazing start, but India have crawled back into the match with two wickets. Six overs have gone by and the score is 47 for 2 for New Zealand.

7:27 PM IST | Probuddha: WHAT A CATCH!!!!! A STUNNER BY SUNDAR!!!!!! Good length ball on the off stump. Mark Chapman pushes at the ball uppishly and the ball flies to the right of Sundar. He dives full stretched and takes a stunning catch to get rid of the ever stable Sundar.

7:24 PM IST| Probuddha: WICKET!!!!!! Washington Sundar does the job for India. A full length delivery and Finn Allen was looking to go over the mid-wicket boundary. The connection was not proper for him and Suryakumar Yadav was waiting there to take and easy catch. The dangerous Finn Allen goes back to the pavillion.

7:23 PM IST| Probuddha: Arshdeep is looking completely out of rhythm.

Probuddha: An economical over by Washington Sundar. That will probably cease the momentum for India.

Shakir: The first three overs done and it seems a high scoring match with some assistance for the spinners. India will be looking to bowl the spinners before the dew comes in affect.

7:14 PM IST| Probuddha: Arshdeep started off with some extras in his first over. India quickly switch to spin here. Washington Sundar is into the attack.

7:12 PM IST| Probuddha: The shape of the ball is already tested. Is Allen hitting that much?

7:06 PM IST| Probuddha: New Zealand are off to a blazing start. 12 runs off the first over and the Indian skipper has been taken to the cleaners in the opening over of the match.

Probuddha: He has been a walk-in wicket for New Zealand. This puts pressure on the middle-order of the Black Caps. I am not expecting him to survive past the Powerplays.

Shakir: New Zealand have been backing Finn Allen for all money, but apart from the match against AUS in the World Cup he hasn't fired. Do you guys think he can fire today?

7:00 PM IST | Probuddha: The New Zealand openers are out there.  Skipper Hardik Pandya with the new ball for India.

6: 55 PM IST | Probuddha: The teams are out their for the National Anthems. However, the big point of discussion making the rounds in social media is the exclusion of Prithvi Shaw.

image-ldekak6wHead-to-Head, India vs New Zealand (Source: OneCricket)

Arnav: Well, I don't really doubt the Indian team's capacity (especially in the bilateral series) and looking at the Kiwis, they might lack steam tonight.

Probuddha: India have been dominant in the longer format but as the format is shortened the difference between the teams also decrease. With the Kiwi spirit to fight back, I surely expect a much more competitive T20I series.

Shakir: India will start as favorites but the Kiwis always turn up to fight, what do you think Probs & Arnav? Will the Kiwi challenge halt the India Juggernaut?

6:30 PM IST| Probuddha: India have won the toss and elected to bowl first

6:23 PM IST | Probuddha: India and New Zealand have played 22 matches in the T20 format, 12 of those matches have been won by India while New Zealand has managed to win 9.

6:19 PM IST| Probuddha: Hardik Pandya already confirmed in the press last night that Ishan Kishan and Shubman Gill will be opening for India. So does that mean Prithvi Shaw sits out? Or is he going to be slotted in the middle order? We have to wait till the toss for all the answers, which is about 11 minutes away

6:10PM IST | Probuddha: Hello and welcome to the minute by minute blog for the first T20I between India and New Zealand. The match will be taking place at JSCA International cricket stadium in Ranchi.

Interestingly India have won all the three matches that they have played here and will look to continue their unbeaten run. India won the three match ODI series by a margin of 3-0 and will try and maintain similar authority in the shorter format.

This is Probuddha Bhattacharje and I will shortly be joined by Arnav Chopra. We will bring you the latest developments reagrding the match. Do keep and eye here......
