Somerset has signed up young all-rounder George Thomas on a two-year contract, which will commence on November 1.

Thomas has signed his first professional contract with the Somerset County Cricket Club after playing a couple of 50-over games in the Royal London One-Day Cup last year. The batting all-rounder joined the Somerset Academy in 2019 after spending three years on the Emerging Player Programme and graduated from the Somerset Academy at the end of this summer.

He enjoyed a successful time playing for England in the Under-19 World Cup out in the West Indies early in 2022 but was unable to play in this season’s Royal London Cup because of injury. Later this summer, however, he impressed for England Under-19s in their one-day series against Sri Lanka and scored 86 in the second match of the series.

The 18-year-old right-handed batter made his debut for Somerset last year in the 2021 Royal London Cup, scoring 75 (77) against Leicestershire, and finished the season with 82 runs in two appearances.

This season, he made four second eleven Championship appearances for Somerset, scoring 196 runs with the help of two fifties and taking three wickets, and a further four in the 2nd XI T20 competition (76 runs and six wickets).

Commenting on signing professional terms with Somerset, Thomas said:

"I'm really happy. This is what I've wanted since I found out what cricket was. I've been on the pathway for over 10 years, and it feels great. In the next two years I want to break my way into the first XI and make as many appearances as I can in all formats of the game and hopefully start to make a name for myself."

Somerset's Head of talent pathway Matt Drakeley believes that Thomas has the potential to forge a good career with the club.

"Signing your first professional contract is always a proud moment, and there aren't many who deserve that moment more than George. He works tirelessly to improve his game, is a fantastic role model to other pathway players and plays the game with enthusiasm and with a smile on his face."
