In a country like India, cricket is a religion, and cricketers are worshiped here. But fan obsession can sometimes become a big trouble, with people misusing their fame or photos for personal gain. To avoid the entire thing, former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar moved to the Delhi High Court.
Moving towards the higher authority, he seeks the protection of his personality rights. Gavaskar has asked the court to prevent various individuals and organizations from using his image or identity without permission. His petition is scheduled for a hearing on December 12, before Justice Manmeet Pritam Singh Arora.
In the Indian cricketing fraternity, Sunil Gavaskar became the first cricketer to seek personality rights. In an era where misuse of celebrities’ photos and personal information is on the rise, such steps are crucial to safeguard their privacy and dignity.
Gavaskar joins Bollywood stars in fighting for personality rights
Sunil Gavaskar made his move long after Bollywood celebrities had already taken a stand. As the Delhi High Court played a crucial role in securing personality rights, stars like Amitabh Bachchan, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Abhishek Bachchan, and Anil Kapoor got their personality rights.
Adding to the list, the Delhi HC also granted podcaster Raj Shamani’s personality rights, and Sunil Gavaskar is the newest addition to the list. With that, the High Court ruled that the stars hold control over how their image or persona is used commercially, in the era of the digital scam.
