In a development that may shock cricket fans around the world, the Assam cricket association has suspended four cricketers for their alleged involvement in corrupt activities during the ongoing Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. For the unversed, Assam had a forgettable SMAT campaign this year, failing to qualify for the Super League of the competition.
Assam cricketers booked under serious charges in SMAT 2025-26
On Friday, the Assam cricket association confirmed the suspension of four cricketers - Amit Sinha, Ishan Ahmed, Aman Tripathi and Abhishek Thakuri - for allegedly influencing corrupt activities during the SMAT campaign. These players have been accused of manipulating their teammates and trapping them into fixing in the competition.
Placed in elite group-A, Assam managed only three wins in seven matches, finishing at seventh in the points table. Despite having a star-studded squad, Assam's underwhelming performance in the tournament prompted the state cricket body to conduct a probe, which found the involvement of the aforementioned players in corrupt activities.
As a result, these cricketers were handed immediate suspensions, with the board also registering formal complaints against them for further criminal proceedings. An FIR was launched in the crime branch in Guwahati, as revealed by Cricbuzz.
So, Amit Sinha, Ishan Ahmed, Aman Tripathi and Abhishek Thakuri won't participate in any cricketing activities conducted by the ACA until they are proven innocent.
Assam's miserable journey in SMAT 2025-26 explained
Led by Riyan Parag, Assam could register only three victories across seven elite group-A fixtures in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. While they defeated Chhattisgarh, Vidarbha and Kerala, Assam lost to Andhra, Railways, Mumbai and Odisha, eventually missing out on a super league qualification.
Mumbai, Andhra, Punjab, Haryana, Hyderabad, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Jharkhand have qualified for the Super League of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. The second round of the competition starts on December 14, with Mumbai and Haryana taking on each other at the DY Patil academy in Mumbai.
