Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) on Tuesday (August 30th) announced the appointment of former India pacer Aavishkar Salvi as the new head coach of the Punjab senior men’s team for the forthcoming domestic season.

Earlier, Punjab Cricket Association invited applications for coaching posts of the state teams of various age-groups. Salvi, who represented Mumbai in his playing career, has been appointed for the role of head coach in the senior men’s team. The 40-year-old replaces former Maharashtra captain and coach Surendra Bhave, under whom Punjab reached the quarter-finals of the Ranji Trophy 2021-22.

Salvi made his international debut against Bangladesh in TVS Cup 2003 and and helped India bowl Bangladesh out for just 76 with his measly 2 wicket spell. He was the Indian Cricket Cricketer of the year 2004 alongside Parthiv Patel, Ambati Rayudu, Ramnaresh Sarwan and Yuvraj Singh. Back in the day his action and length very much resembled McGrath’s. Unfortunately, he had a serious back problem and a few shoulder injuries which cut short his international career to only four ODIs in his career.

However, Salvi played 62 games and took 169 wickets in his first-class career. He also played 52 List-A matches and 19 T20s in his career. Besides that, he also represented Delhi Daredevils in the IPL 2009 and shared the dressing room with his idol Glenn McGrath.

Post his retirement, Salvi became a coach and was a part of the coaching staff of the Puducherry senior men’s team in 2018. Besides that, Salvi also has been the coach of Oman who qualified for the T20 World Cup in UAE last year.

Salvi will join the Punjab players’ camp on September 4 ahead of the JP Atray memorial cricket tournament starting September 22. He will be joined by Shiv Sundar Das, who was previously with the Indian Women’s cricket team, has been appointed as Punjab men's batting coach.
