Chennai Super Kings (CSK) may face challenges in the death bowling department during the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 until Ben Stokes is available to bowl, according to former India cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar.

Speaking on ESPN Cricinfo's Timeout, Manjrekar expressed concerns about CSK's death bowling and highlighted the lack of experience with their current options.

Although the renowned commentator recognized MS Dhoni's captaincy as a significant factor in CSK's success, he believed the team's death bowling needed attention. He suggested that until Ben Stokes, who is currently unavailable, is able to bowl, CSK may have issues in the death bowling department.

"I'm slightly concerned about their death bowling. They have Dwaine Pretorious, but I doubt he has that experience. Until Ben Stokes can't bowl, CSK might have issues with death bowling," said Manjrekar.

However, Manjrekar added that the four-time IPL champions have a good track record of bouncing back after a poor season and predicted that they would be one of the four teams to reach the playoffs.

Deepak Chahar might be a death-over option for CSK

The Indian veteran further stated that he believes Deepak Chahar could bowl well at the death, particularly if he performs well with the new ball. He also mentioned that besides Dwaine Pretorius, Sri Lanka's Maheesh Theekshana as a potential option once he becomes available.

"I think MS Dhoni might bowl one or two overs of Deepak Chahar at the death. If he bowls well with the new ball, then Dhoni will keep one for the last," concluded the erstwhile cricketer.

Chennai Super Kings will kick-start their IPL 2023 campaign on Friday, March 31 against defending champions Gujarat Champions led by Hardik Pandya. The curtain-raiser for the two-month long cricketing carnival will take place at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
