The Asia Cup 2025 is around three weeks away, with eight teams taking part in the prestigious continental cup. At present, the focus is on Ajit Agarkar and the selection committee for them to release the 15-member squad.
Several spots are up for grabs as Suryakumar Yadav, the Indian skipper, is fighting hard to get fit in time to play the Asia Cup 2025. Meanwhile, there were reports that the IPL stars would be rewarded for their performance, and the selectors would pick them in the 15-member list.
Iyer Finding Hard To Get A Place
However, in the latest events, a Times of India report mentioned that things are not looking positive for Shreyas Iyer, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill.
The report added that Iyer, despite producing a solid show in the IPL, is finding it difficult to get a place in the squad. Notably, the Punjab Kings captain scored 604 runs in the entire tournament.
Talking about Yashasvi Jaiswal, the selectors want him to focus on red-ball cricket and do not want to disturb his mindset by shifting the southpaw to T20 cricket. Further, contrary to the reports that Gill will be named the team's vice-captain, his place in the team is still uncertain, and the selectors remain divided.
"In fact, with India looking to persist with the opening pair of Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma, Gill is currently struggling to even make it to the side. Even Yashasvi Jaiswal, who had a great series in England, and middle-order bat Shreyas Iyer are likely not to be picked for the T20 side. Jaiswal has been told by the selectors to focus on red-ball cricket," a source revealed.
Asia Cup Squad To Be Revealed On August 19
"Yes, the team for the Asia Cup will be picked on Aug 19 in Mumbai. The selection committee meeting will be followed by a press conference by chief selector, former India pacer Ajit Agarkar," a source in the BCCI said.
Talking about the squad, Suryakumar Yadav is most likely to lead the captain, but a few changes are expected at the last moment as SKY has travelled to Japan for a few days.
