The Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) has taken the unprecedented step of suspending its Joint Secretary, Debabrata Das, for six months following serious allegations of financial misconduct. This marks the first time the state cricket body has taken such action against a top-ranking official.
Das has been immediately barred from all CAB activities and positions while the association initiates a thorough investigation into the financial transactions and allegations against him, sending shockwaves through the Bengal and Indian cricket community.
Das Gets Barred For Misappropriating CAB funds
Das faces a range of serious accusations. He is alleged to have accepted money from individuals in exchange for promises of securing selections for Bengal teams or clubs affiliated with the CAB.
Furthermore, he stands accused of misappropriating CAB funds by authorising food bills for players of the Town Club, a club he chairs, and routing these expenses through the CAB's official canteen expenditure. Additionally, he is alleged to have pressured players to represent Town Club, offering verbal assurances of future Bengal team selections as an inducement.
CAB Suspends Funding
In a direct response to the alleged misuse of funds involving Town Club, the CAB has decided to suspend all funding to the club. This move underscores the severity with which the association is treating the allegations against its joint secretary.
The suspension follows an earlier show-cause notice issued to Das in August. That notice accused him of withholding nearly ₹7 lakh in ticket revenue owed to the association and retaining funds designated for East Bengal and Town Club's participation in tournaments. The CAB had directed Das to clear these dues within 15 days.
The CAB's Apex Council has stated that the ongoing investigation into Das's conduct will be concluded within the six-month suspension period. Based on the findings of this investigation, the council will determine what further action is necessary.
