Former Sri Lanka domestic cricketer Saliya Saman has been banned for five years by the International Cricket Council (ICC). An ICC Anti-Corruption Tribunal found him guilty of breaching the Emirates Cricket Board (ECB) Anti-Corruption Code, for his involvement in breaches during the 2021 Abu Dhabi T10 League.
The tribunal conducted the hearing on behalf of the ECB, and it found Saman’s involvement in attempts to corrupt several matches of the tournament.
Saliya Saman Found Guilty On Three Counts
Saliya Saman was one of the eight people charged in September 2023 for corruption offenses. The charges against Saman relates to three different articles of the ECB's anti-corruption code. They are:
- 2.1.1 - Being party to an attempt to fix, contrive or influence improperly matches or aspects of matches in the Abu Dhabi T10 2021.
- 2.1.3 - Offering a Reward to another Participant in exchange for that player engaging in Corrupt Conduct under the Code.
- 2.1.4 - Directly or indirectly soliciting, inducing, enticing, instructing, persuading, encouraging or intentionally facilitating any Participant to breach Code Article 2.1.
Saliya Saman was provisionally suspended back in September 2023. He was one of the eight people, all associated with the Pune Devils franchise in the 2021 edition of the Abu Dhabi T10 League, who were charged for breaching the ECB Code.
Since his ban is backdated to September 2023, the cricketer has now already served nearly two years of his five-year sentence.
Saliya Saman, aged 39, is a Sri Lankan all-rounder who played 101 first-class matches, aggregating 3,662 runs at an average of 27.95 and picking up 231 wickets at 25.92. He also played 77 List A and 47 T20 matches in his career.
