'He was shocked': Rohit Sharma Left Amazed as Gill Hits Lyon for a Huge Six

In a stunning display of batting prowess, Indian opener Shubman Gill exhibited exemplary footwork and effortlessly dealt with Nathan Lyon's flighted delivery, dispatching the ball straight over the Australian spinner's head for a six in the last over on Day 2 of the final Test in Ahmedabad.

Given the benign nature of the pitch at the Narendra Modi Stadium and Gill's well-known prowess against off-spin, the shot itself was not particularly unexpected. However, what made it particularly surprising was the fact that it occurred in the final over of play, after Australia had posted a colossal total of 480 in their first innings.

Gill, along with his opening partner Rohit Sharma, had been tasked with seeing off the remaining 10 overs of the day after spending a gruelling two days in the sweltering Ahmedabad heat. From the outset, both openers looked positive and capitalised on anything short from the Australian pacers, Mitchell Starc and Cameron Green.

It wasn't long before Steve Smith turned to spin, and Lyon was brought into the attack. While the Indian skipper showed the veteran spinner the respect he deserved, Gill stunned everyone by charging down the track and hitting the seasoned spinner over the top in the last over of the day.

Even Rohit Sharma was taken aback by Gill's audacious shot which was revealed by the young batter himself after the end of play on Day 3.

"He was surprised. But I told him that's my shot. If an off-spinner is bowling on a good wicket, like the one we are playing on and the field was up to me. I thought that was my shot and I was confident that I would hit for a boundary," Gill told reporters at the end of Day 3.

Meanwhile, on the third day of the game, the poised batter continued to exhibit his remarkable form and proceeded to achieve a stupendous century. Gill, who was appointed to take the place of KL Rahul in the final two matches as an opener, delivered an enthralling performance on the sluggish pitch of Ahmedabad, reaching his century in 194 deliveries, featuring a commendable display of nine fours and a solitary six.

This accomplishment marked his second Test century, and remarkably, the first one achieved on the Indian soil. It is noteworthy to mention that the 23 year old's first Test century was scored against Bangladesh in Chattogram in December 2022.
