The inevitable happened on Monday as the fear of Virat Kohli's Test retirement came true. The India great announced his decision through a post on social media handle, Instagram and bid adieu to his dearest format after 14 years. However, he will continue to play ODIs for Indian team.
The former cricketer brought down curtains to a stellar Test career where he notched up 9230 runs with 30 centuries to his name. Also, he was the most successful Indian Test captain, with 40 wins to his name.
Why BCCI stopped Kohli from retiring the same day as Rohit
The shocking retirement announcement came on Monday, but as per Indian Express report, the India stalwart wanted to retire the same day as his teammate, Rohit Sharma. Rohit retired from Tests on May 7, and Kohli wanted to follow the footsteps, but he was advised by BCCI to delay the announcement as "Operation Sindoor", the military conflicts with Pakistan was underway.
Also, the desire to spend more time with his family was one of the main reason why Kohli wanted to retire from the format.
Kohli on the importance of family
"The role of family is very difficult to explain to people. How grounding it is to just come back to your family every time you have something which is intense, which happens on the outside," Kohli had said at an event during the IPL 2025.
After retiring from Tests and T20Is, last year, Kohli will next be seen in India colours if they tour Bangladesh in August for a white-ball series. However, that series hangs in jeopardy and if it doesn't take place, Kohli will wear the Blue Jersey against Australia in October.
