Since the start of the IPL, India have never won a T20 World Cup: Wasim Akram

The former Pakistan pacer Wasim Akram thinks that the Indian Premier League has not been much of a help for the Indian players in securing T20 World Cup trophies.

India last won the T20 WC trophy in 2007, a year before the inaugural season of the IPL. It was the title victory of the Men in Blue, which helped IPL to progress at a brisk pace.

Currently, the IPL is arguably the finest league in the world in terms of competitiveness, sponsorship, big market and money.-wise. Although the tournament has produced world-class players for the Indian team,  it has not resulted in them winning any showpiece event in the shortest format.

With India failing to deliver their best in crunch moments in the knockout stages, there has been strong criticism by the cricket fraternity. After India's loss to England in the semi-finals of the T20 WC, Akram thinks IPL hasn't made any difference to Indian cricket in the T20Is.

"Everyone thought the IPL will be the big difference between India and other teams. IPL started in 2008. India won a T20 World Cup before that in 2007. Since the start of the IPL, India have never won a T20 World Cup. They won a World Cup in 2011 but that's 50 overs," Akram said on A Sports.

Pakistan middle-order batter Shoaib Malik thinks BCCI should allow Indian players to participate in the overseas leagues. He added that the players would get exposure to different conditions, which can help them perform well for the country in big events.

India will be seen locking horns with New Zealand in the three-match T20I and ODI series starting November 18.
