Sunil Gavaskar Says Rohit Sharma Doesn't Get Enough Credit; Compared to MS Dhoni

Former Indian captain, Sunil Gavaskar, believes that Rohit Sharma, the captain of Mumbai Indians (MI), is not given enough credit compared to his Chennai Super Kings (CSK) counterpart, MS Dhoni. Gavaskar highlights the recent example of MI's victory over Lucknow Super Giants in the IPL 2023 Eliminator, where Rohit's strategic choices played a crucial role.

In an interview with India Today, Gavaskar specifically mentions Rohit's tactics during the match, such as using Akash Madhwal to dismiss Ayush Badoni and Nicholas Pooran in a single over. Gavaskar notes that Rohit suggested a change in bowling angle, which was not widely discussed.

"He is underrated. The man has won five titles for Mumbai Indians. Let me give you an example. (Akash) Madhwal got Ayush Badoni, bowling over the wicket. He then went round the wicket to the left-hander Nicholas Pooran," said Sunil Gavaskar in an interview with India Today.

The ex-Indian opener suggests that if a similar situation had occurred with CSK and Dhoni as the captain, the CSK veteran would have received more recognition for his tactical prowess.

"Not a lot of bowlers necessarily do that because if they get their rhythm going bowling over the wicket, they will stick to over the wicket even it's a left-hander, trying to leave the left-hander. But he went around the wicket and produced an absolute gem of a delivery and got the man out. If that had been CSK and Dhoni was the captain. Everybody would have said 'Dhoni plotted Nicholas Pooran's dismissal."

"This is what happens to a great extent. There is also a little bit of hype, things sometimes work out," Gavaskar further added.

Gavaskar acknowledges that there is often hype and biases in evaluating captaincy performances, and sometimes things work out differently than expected.
