Indian cricket is going through a serious shake-up. With Rohit Sharma already calling time on his red-ball career and Virat Kohli reportedly telling the BCCI he is ready to hang up his Test boots too, a massive void has opened up at the top of the order.
Sai Sudharsan Locked And Loaded For England Tests
While the board is doing everything it can to get Kohli to stick around for the England tour, selectors aren’t taking any chances. The hunt for fresh faces is on and leading that pack is Gujarat Titans' captain, Shubman Gill’s opening partner, Sai Sudharsan.
The Ajit Agarkar-led selection panel is expected to drop the official squad later this month and one name almost locked in is Sudharsan, the elegant left-hander from Tamil Nadu who has been making waves with the bat in IPL 2025.
If reports are anything to go by, there is no more speculation when it comes to Sai Sudharsan’s Test debut. The 22-year-old, who has been quietly climbing the ladder, is said to be a sure-shot inclusion in the squad that will travel to England. Whether he opens or bats at No.3, the buzz is that Team India sees him as a long-term red-ball investment.
Sudharsan’s rise has been methodical, not flashy but full of determination. From racking up runs in the domestic circuit to impressing in the IPL for Gujarat Titans, he has shown the kind of temperament that could click in England’s testing conditions.
Shubman Gill Frontrunner To Be India’s Test Captain
With Rohit gone and Jasprit Bumrah’s fitness always on edge, the selectors reportedly toyed with the idea of handing the Test captaincy back to Virat Kohli, just to give Shubman Gill more time to grow into the leadership role. After all, Gill is only 25 and still finding his feet in all formats.
But given Kohli’s uncertain future, the leadership mantle might just fall in Gill’s lap sooner than expected. According to sources, the idea of giving Kohli the reins one last time was discussed but didn’t get past the drawing board.
Team India Undergoing Big Transition
Whether Virat Kohli stays or walks, a new era is on the horizon. With players like Sai Sudharsan waiting in the wings and Gill set to take over the reins, Team India is preparing for a big transition.
The squad for the England tour will be announced after the third week of May and India A’s team is expected earlier. What remains to be seen is if the BCCI can pull off one final masterstroke by convincing Kohli to delay the inevitable. Because if not now, the Test baton is about to be passed… ready or not.
