Gill Meets Agarkar And Gambhir Amid Captaincy Talks
Meanwhile, Shubman Gill has met BCCI's chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar and the current Indian head coach Gautam Gambhir amid the talks of him replacing Rohit Sharma as the new Test captain.
According to a report by the Dainik Jagran, Gill met Agarkar and Gambhir, discussing the future plans with two most significant members of the Indian think tank. The report also claims that the BCCI will formally appoint Gill as the Test skipper through a press conference, which will likely be held on either May 23 or 24.
Gill, 25, has represented India in 32 Test matches, amassing 1893 runs at an average of 35.06. He has struck five Test centuries, establishing himself as a vital cog in the Indian Test lineup after the BCCI moved on from the veteran duo of Ajinkya Rahane and Cheteshwar Pujara.
As per the latest reports, Rishabh Pant is the frontrunner to become India's vice-captain in Tests, with the BCCI aiming to manage Jasprit Bumrah's workload by not burdening him with additional leadership responsibilities.
India Squad To Be Picked Soon; BCCI In Talks With Virat Kohli
Several reports have stated that the BCCI is in talks with Virat Kohli, who has apparently made up his mind to retire from Test cricket. With Rohit Sharma retired, the cricketing body wants its most experienced middle-order batter to play in the England Tests.
However, if Kohli retires, India could play the five-match series with a relatively inexperienced batting unit.
