Veteran Indian seamer Deepak Chahar stepped up for his IPL franchise Chennai Super Kings on Sunday night, as he derailed Kolkata Knight Riders by an exceptional spell of seam bowling in the power play. Chahar, who was blowing hot and cold until now, proved his worth for the umpteenth time through his magical opening spell.

Batting first, CSK posted a respectable total of 144 runs, riding on a flamboyant 48-run knock from Shivam Dube. Although the wicket was slow, CSK needed Deepak Chahar to provide them with some early breakthroughs, which the old workhorse did with the utmost perfection, getting rid of Jason Roy, Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Venkatesh Iyer in his first three overs.

The ace CSK seamer triggered the collapse by dismissing the danger man Gurbaz in the very first over. After that, he managed to take the outside edge of Iyer and Roy, who were caught by Ravindra Jadeja and Matheesha Pathirana, respectively, at short third man.

Notably, Chahar was criticised severely for being injury-prone in recent times. Therefore, he needed a jail break kind of performance to uplift his morale and silence his critics. He did precisely that tonight, proving why MS Dhoni trusts him blindly with the new ball.

Thanks to Chahar's sensational opening burst, KKR got off to a disastrous start to their innings. As of writing, they are reeling at 61 for three, with Nitish Rana and Rinku Singh batting on 13* and 23*, respectively.
