Records Kohli will fail to break if he retires [Source: @Rajiv1841/x.com]
The unthinkable might just happen and Virat Kohli could retire from Test cricket before the England tour. As per reports, the India great has written to BCCI, citing his desire to retire from the game's longest format. However, the board is reluctant and they want Kohli to re-think his decision.
With Rohit Sharma already retired from Tests, India cannot afford to lose Kohli before the England tour and his experience will be valuable for the next Test captain - most likely Shubman Gill. However, if Kohli indeed sticks to his decision and bows out before the England tour, he will miss out on two huge milestones in the format.
1) Joining 10,000 Test runs club
Virat Kohli in an old interview stated that his dream in Tests is to score 10,000 runs before taking retirement. Currently, India's number 4 stands at 9230 Test runs and needs 730 more runs in 5 Tests to enter the club.
5 Tests means at-least 10 innings to achieve the target and Kohli will miss out on his childhood milestone if he decides to retire from Test cricket immediately.
2) Most runs for India in WTC history
At the moment, former Test captain, Rohit Sharma holds the record of scoring most runs for India in WTC history. The right-handed batter had amassed 2716 runs, while Kohli currently has 2617 runs, meaning that the legendary batter is only 99 runs to go past his former teammate, and opening batter, Rohit Sharma.
However, if he retires now, Kohli will miss out on an opportunity to break two elusive records in Test cricket.
