Former Ireland cricketer Tim Murtagh has signed a one-year player-coach deal with Middlesex Cricket County Club (MCCC) for the upcoming 2023 season.

Murtagh, a club legend, has played 353 matches and picked up 985 wickets since joining the county in 2007.

The 41-year-old will work closely with the first-team bowling coach Richard Johnson and mostly interact with fast bowlers.

Interestingly, the Irishman donned the role of interim bowling coach last year during the Royal London Cup 2022, when Jade Dernbach moved to The Hundred.

Overall, the London-born has played 258 First-Class, 214 List-A, and 109 T20s in a career spanning 23 years.

In a club statement, Murtagh expressed his excitement to be top-flight with Middlesex for another year.

Here's what Murtagh said

"I am delighted to be continuing my playing career for another season after the high of getting promoted last year and am really excited for the opportunity to develop my coaching skills alongside playing this year"

Alan Coleman, Director of Cricket, also welcomed the tall bowler into their coaching staff and said,

"Inevitably playing careers come to an end, and we have to prepare ourselves for a time when we won't be seeing Murts trundling in and trapping batters in front, although for 2023 we’re stoked that he'll still be doing his stuff with the ball, whilst also building up more coaching experience and helping the bowling group develop.

Murtagh represented Ireland in 3 Tests, 58 ODIs and 14 T20Is between 2012 and 2019.
