Usman Qadir joins Sydney Thunder for the Big Bash League 2022-23

In a remarkable turn of events, Sydney Thunder have signed famed Pakistani spinner Usman Qadir for the Big Bash League starting next month.

It is understood that Qadir has been called in as a cover for Tanveer Sangha, who will miss the major portion of the tournament owing to a stress fracture. In this process, the wily leg-spinner becomes Thunder's fourth overseas signing after Alex Hales, Rilee Rossouw and Fazalhaq Farooqi.

Andrew Gilchrist, the Thunder's head coach, addressed Qadir as a vital addition to their squad, as the tweaker, besides being skilful, has the experience of playing in the Australian conditions.

Here's what Gilchrist said

"Usman joins us with plenty of experience, having represented Pakistan, and playing in T20 leagues around the world,

"Importantly, he has firsthand knowledge of Australian conditions, he played for Western Australia and South Australia's Futures League, so he knows what to expect."

In 23 T20Is, Qadir has scalped 29 wickets at an impressive strike rate of 14.07. He has previously represented the Perth Scorchers in the BBL, albeit with a modest success, picking six wickets at an ordinary economy of 8.45.

Meanwhile, Sydney Thunder will face Melbourne Stars in the opening clash of the tournament in Canberra on December 13.
