Definitely a starter for the World Cup: Dinesh Karthik bats for Shikhar Dhawan

The Men in Blue's next big assignment is the World Cup 2023 which is scheduled to be played in India. Shikhar Dhawan, who now just plays ODI cricket for India, is most probably a definite pick for the two-time champions. However, there is a lobby that is favouring Shubman Gill over the experienced pro.

In 2022, Gill is averaging 78.1 after scoring 625 runs from 11 games in One-Dayers. Meanwhile, the 36-year-old batter has been leading India in absence of the regular skipper Rohit Sharma and his deputy KL Rahul.

Although, statistically, this has been Dhawan's worst year since being a regular for India. This year, he has averaged 40.1 and his strike rate has nosedived to 75.8.

Dinesh Karthik has come out and called the left-handed batter a definite pick for the upcoming ICC event.

“From the kind of vibe I get, he is definitely a starter for the World Cup. Otherwise, they wouldn't be having him around. He is on the other side of his 30s and they could have easily moved on from him,” Karthik commented on Cricbuzz.

“He has been a gun player in ICC tournaments, somebody who rises to the occasion and he plays at a fair clip consistently.

“He is somebody you can trust as an opener as he knows his game plan. Most importantly, it (NZ series) would be another chance for him to lead a team before the IPL and that is something he will be looking forward to,” cited Karthik.

Dhawan, in the ongoing ODI series against New Zealand, has notched up a 72 and 3 in the two first matches. The third ODI against the Black Caps will be played at Christchurch on Wednesday.
