Ahead of the high-profile New Zealand tour of West Indies, Cricket West Indies have announced a 13-member squad with three reserve players for the first and second One Day Internationals. The tour comprises three ODIs and five T20 Internationals. The first ODI was originally planned for September 16, but the Tropical Storm Fiona forced the authorities to reschedule it to September 19 at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in North Sound, Antigua.

One of the notable inclusions in the team is Natasha McLean. The experienced wicketkeeper-batter last donned the national jersey two years back for a five-match T20I series against England. The veteran has been added as a potential replacement for Shemaine Campbelle.

Hayley Matthews’ first game as the captain

The Guyanese cricketer suffered an injury and thus has been ruled out of the entire white-ball tour. Apart from Campbelle, the team will be without the services of Deandra Dottin as she bid adieu to the game last month.

Meanwhile, Anisa Mohammed and Kycia Knight will also be missing the 50-over format. Notably, this is an instrumental series for the skipper Hayley Matthews as she recently took the reins of the team from Stafanie Taylor.

The lead selector opens up on the team

Speaking about the squad selection, Ann Browne-John, Women’s cricket lead selector, said that they are trying to make a perfect balance between the youth and experience in the team.

As per Cricket West Indies' official website, Ann said,

“The CG United ODI Series against New Zealand is another opportunity to continue to build the team. The panel once again has blended developing and senior players. Unfortunately, Shemaine Campbelle has been ruled out of the series through injury. It is hoped that particularly the batters will use this CG United ODI series to get some big scores which will boost confidence.”
