County Championship 2022 | Division One Round-Up, September 5

The 2022 County Championship resumed on Monday, September 5 with a total of four Division One matches being played across four different venues in England. At the end of the opening day of action, here is a look at the high points from each of those four matches: 


Gloucestershire vs Somerset 

In the bottom-of-the-table clash, Gloucestershire took on Somerset at the Cooper Associates County Ground, Taunton. Asked to bat first, the visitors finished off the first day with 320 for 6 with Marcus Harris guiding the way with 159 runs off 263 balls, including 17 fours and a six. 

Ben Charlesworth and Oliver Prince also chipped in with hefty contributions with the bat. While Charlesworth plundered 56 off 120 deliveries, the 21-year-old Oliver pitched in with 53 runs off 137 balls. Jack Taylor (15*) and Tom Prince (3*) will resume the first innings for Gloucestershire on Day 2 tomorrow.

Essex vs Kent

Essex, after putting in to bat first posted 327 runs for the loss of four wickets at the end of the first day's play. 

Former England captain Alastair Cook's run appetite was on display again as he charted 78 runs off 157 deliveries to provide Essex a stable start. The other opener Nick Browne and skipper Tom Westley also weighed in with 45 and 54 runs respectively. 

Matthew Critchley (80*) and Ferzo Khusi (46*) will be seen in action when Essex resumes their first inning on Day 2 tomorrow at St Lawrence Ground Canterbury.

Hampshire vs Northamptonshire 

Hampshire finished off the opening day with 229 runs on the board with five men down. The right-handed Felix Organ continued his fine form in the competition and peeled off 71 runs at the top to provide the team with a steady start.

The middle order, consisting of Joe Weatherley (14), Nick Gubbins (23), and skipper James Vince (19) couldn't make their stay longer on the crease and perished off after playing breezy cameos. Liam Dawson (43*) and Aneurin Donald (23*) will carry on the first inning of Hampshire on Day 2.

Lancashire vs Yorkshire 

In the battle of the roses, Lancashire locked horns with Yorkshire at Old Trafford, Manchester. The Red Rose among the two won the toss and opted to bat first. 

Luke Wells (84) and Keaton Jennings (90) got Lancashire off to a flyer thanks to their respective belligerent knocks. Josh Bohannon also chipped in with a handy contribution of 27 runs. 

However, except the forenamed players, none of their players could find their feet in the middle and the successive blows by Yorkshire saw Lancashire lurking at 272 for eight at the close.
