Zimbabwe defeated Australia by three wickets in the third and final ODI in Townsville to finish the series on a high. The win was historic, because it was Zimbabwe’s first win against Australia in Australia.

Their bowlers did a wonderful job to bowl out Australia for 141 runs in the first innings. Ryan Burl, with five wickets, was the star performer, while Brad Evans picked up two wickets. In reply, the visitors chased down the target in 39 overs to avoid a series whitewash.

Dave Houghton, head coach of Zimbabwe's said the team and management is "over the moon" after the memorable win.

"We're over the moon," Houghton said in the press conference. "We don't get to beat the big sides that often and to beat them in their country is a huge plus for us and our cricket at the moment."

Houghton also wished that the result would help them fetch more matches against competitive teams.

"I hope it goes a lot way towards providing that more matches. There's a bit of good cricket coming up for us over the next six months, but it would be nice to get involved in tours to the bigger countries. The more wins we can get on tours like this, the more our chances are that we might get some bigger opponents on a regular basis."

Houghton, who was regarded as one of the best batsmen to have emerged from Zimbabwe, was also the team’s first Test captain. Houghton holds the record for the highest Test score by a Zimbabwean (266 against Sri Lanka in 1994). Houghton played three ICC Cricket World Cup tournaments in 1983, 1987 and 1992 before announcing international retirement in 1997. Since retirement, he has worked as a commentator and coach.
