Virender Sehwag will always be remembered as one of the finest opening batters in the annals of Indian cricket. The opener was one of the first players to introduce India to the concept of batting fearlessly and aggressively. The unorthodox approach of the right-hander led him to a glorious cricket career with over 8586 Test and 8273 ODI runs in 104 and 251 matches respectively.

However, everything was not rosy for the veteran from the very beginning. The 43-year-old had the worst start to One Day Internationals as he bagged a duck against Pakistan on his debut in April 1999. Failing to perform against Pakistan is a big setback for any Indian player and naturally, Sehwag was also subjected to a lot of criticism.

The opening batter names his favorite memory from India vs Pakistan clash

On his next tour to Pakistan, the opening batter perfectly redeemed himself. Though the 2004 ODI series against the Men in Green didn’t go as per plan, Sehwag thrashed the opposition bowlers all over the park in the three-match Test series. He played one of the best knocks of his cricket career by hammering a triple-century at Multan.

The 309-run knock came at a crucial point for Sehwag as he was under major scrutiny for his performance in the purest format of the game. Reminiscing the innings, Sehwag mentioned how all the media and commentators were questioning his credentials as a Test player.

He also labeled it as his favorite memory from India vs Pakistan rivalry. Meanwhile, the Delhi-born has invited a huge controversy by calling Pakistan pacers Shabbir Ahmed and Abdul Razzaq spinners. Playing at Multan, Sehwag had a tough time in the middle as he faced the likes of Shoaib Akhtar and Mohammad Sami.

Sehwag describes his 309-run knock

The Indian batter revealed how he hammered Ahmed and Razzaq. Speaking to Star Sports ahead of India’s clash against Pakistan in Asia Cup 2022, Sehwag reckoned:

“My 309-run knock at Multan is my favorite memory from India vs Pakistan rivalry because no one expected that a player like Sehwag, an opener could score 300. Shoaib was bowling around 155 kph and Sami was constantly clocking 145. But once both of their spells got over, it became easier for me because when Shabbir Ahmed and Abdul Razzaq – those two pacers came to bowl, it felt like I was facing spinners."

After a big statement by India’s veteran, it will be interesting to see how the Pakistan bowlers react to it.
