'Having a go at him unnecessarily'- Wasim Akram hits back at Virat Kohli's critics

Legendary Pakistan cricketer Wasim Akram has thrown his weight of support behind former Indian skipper Virat Kohli, stating some of the criticism that the 33-year-old is facing is unnecessary.

Speaking to the media during a press-conference ahead of the upcoming Asia Cup, the former left-arm seamer hailed Kohli as an all-format great and he believes that it's just a matter of time before the Indian cricketer regains his form.

Akram also called out the negative discourse against Kohli on social media and from a section of media, stating that it's completely necessary.

Here's what Wasim Akram said:

"Let me start off with from last year or so, whatever I have been seeing on social media, from Indian fans, against Virat Kohli... most of them, fans or press, or whoever they may be, having a go at him unnecessarily. He is only 33, he is one of the greatest of all time," as quoted by India Today.

"He is extraordinary. He is averaging 50-plus in all formats, he is still fit as a fiddle, he is still one of the best fielders in the Indian squad and like they say, form is temporary, class is forever. That is Virat Kohli. I am sure he will come back and score runs. I hope he doesn't come back against Pakistan, but he will make a comeback," he added.

Can Virat Kohli turn around his fortunes in the Asia Cup?

Kohli will return to international cricket after a considerable time away from the game in next week's Asia Cup.

The former skipper has endured an extremely tough time this year. He had a forgettable IPL season, where he managed just 2 50+ scores across 16 outings.

He was rested for the T20I series against South Africa and Ireland, and while he did return for the England trip, it proved to be less than fruitful.

Kohli then asked for a break and, hence, missed out on the tours of the Caribbean and Zimbabwe. He will look to regain his touch against his favoured opponent- Pakistan- when he takes strike in Dubai on August 28.
