Just when the West Indies were looking for a comeback after breaking the partnership of Tom Latham and Daryl Mitchell, James Neesham finished things off in style with a maximum as New Zealand won the third ODI by five wickets and their first ever men’s ODI series by 2-1.

Chasing a total of 302, the visitors lost in-form Finn Allen early in the powerplay. But Martin Guptill from the other end got off to a good start, scoring a half century and had an 82-run partnership for the second wicket with Devon Conway.

Alzarri Joseph finally got the breakthrough, sending back Guptill for 57, who was followed by Conway at 56 and New Zealand were 128 for 3 at the halfway mark.

Just when the hosts were trying to take control of the game, Tom Latham and Daryl Mitchell stitched together a match-winning partnership of 120 runs, taking the game away from the West Indies completely.

At the end Neesham scored 34 off just 11 balls and took New Zealand home with 17 balls remaining.

Pooran, Mayers fire West Indies to 301

Earlier, after being asked to bat first, the West Indies openers started very well. After a slow start in the powerplay, Kyle Mayers and Shai Hope went on to score 173 runs for the first wicket, with Mayers (105 off 110) scoring his second ODI century.

The opening stand was finally ended by Trent Boult, who dismissed Hope for 51. Once Hope was gone, West Indies lost wickets in clusters and were 191 for 4 all of a sudden.

But then captain Pooran (91 off 55 ) came to the rescue for the West Indies. Alzarri Joseph’s (20 off 6) cameo  played a key role in the hosts getting past 300 and finishing with 301 for 8 at the end of 50 overs.

Trent Boult was the pick of the New Zealand bowlers with 3 for 53.
