The Hundred Men 2022: Superchargers cleans Phoenix in a one-sided encounter by 32 runs

Birmingham Phoenix's fortress Edgbaston was breached for the first time in history by none other than Northern Superchargers, who asserted success by 32 runs in the 19th match of the Hundred.

Put into bat, Superchargers' skipper Faf du Plessis (9) lost his stumps to a delivery from medium pacer Tom Helm when the team was cruising at 37 from just 16 deliveries. However, thanks to a wondrous effort from Adam Lyth (56) and Adam Hose (53), the Leeds-based side never looked in trouble. The duo added 37 for the second wicket before Lyth departed, but the Hose show gave Superchargers' side a realistic chance.

David Wiese gave a glimpse of his power-hitting skills at the death by blistering 34 from mere 14 balls mustering four sixes to ensure his team reached the score of 169 by the end. 

Moeen Ali bowled with great control, acquiring two wickets for 13 runs in 15 deliveries. Kane Richardson did take two wickets but gave away 36 runs at an economy of 1.8 per ball.

Wiese again in the limelight

Looking at 170 for the chase, Phoenix started well, but Will Smeed (15) holed out to du Plessis at mid-off to a David Willey delivery on the 24th ball of the match. Soon after this, the Birmingham side fell like nail pins one after the other. The score after the 53rd delivery read 68/5 with big hitters Liam Livingstone, skipper Moeen Ali and Matthew Wade already in the dugout.

The Phoenix's innings fell apart, with none of the batters making a significant contribution for their side, with the highest score being 31 from opener Miles Hammond. Every bowler in the Superchargers' side had at least one written after their name in the wickets column. 

But the standout was once again Wiese, who not just scalped three but was also on a hattrick after getting Benny Howell (22) and Henry Brookes (0) at the beginning of the last ten deliveries. At the end, Phoenix were 32 short of the target giving two crucial points to Superchargers.
