Bizarre Incident denies Blair Tickner from taking Simi Singh's wicket

New Zealand pacer Blair Tickner missed out on adding a wicket to his tally during the second One-day International against Ireland on Tuesday, thanks to a bizarre incident.

It all happened in the 43rd over of the Irish innings when Tickner, who had been carted for three fours by George Dockrell earlier in the over, induced an outside edge off Simi Singh's bat with a slower delivery.

Singh, who wanted to dab it past the third man, could only manage a faint tickle and New Zealand skipper Tom Latham did the rest as he dived to his right before managing to get his fingers right under the ball.

On-field umpire Paul Reynolds initially gave Singh out. However, the umpire decided to take it upstairs to fully confirm the integrity of the catch.

However, replays showed that as Tickner was about to deliver the ball, the towel tucked in his back fell off simultaneously.

While it did not distract the batsman in any way, it was deemed a 'dead ball' as per the game's laws.

Following this, Tom Latham had a lengthy chat with umpire Aleem Dar but play finally resumed after the officials persuaded the Kiwi skipper.

The incident underlined the kind of day that Tickner had at the office, and the seamer eventually ended up with forgettable figures of 0/42 in 6 overs.

However, it did nothing to change Ireland's fortunes as Jacob Duffey, and Mitchell Santner walked past the home sides' lower-order by claiming their last four wickets for 31 runs.

Ireland eventually finished at 216, with Dockrell being the top scorer. The spin-bowling all-rounder smashed two sixes and ten fours during his 61-ball 74.

In response, New Zealand got off to a poor start as Mark Adair removed Martin Guptill and Will Young for golden ducks in the first over of the innings.

However, New Zealand still managed to get past the Irish hurdle with three wickets in hand, thanks to match-winning fifties from Finn Allen and Tom Latham along with some handy runs lower down the order from Michael Bracewell.
