BBL Knockout: On the charge Heat look to topple batting heavyweights Thunder

Brisbane having defeated Perth Scorchers in their last league game to make it to the BBL Finals and then Adelaide Strikers in the Eliminator would look to make it three in three when they face the Sydney Thunder in the Knockout at the Manuka Oval on Sunday. The winner of this game would play the loser of the qualifier between Perth Scorchers and Sydney Sixers.

Heat have been able to click at the right time with the likes of Marnus Labuschagen bringing in all the energy at the right moment. However, Thunder is no pushover by any means and neither are they in a bad form. They beat Strikers comprehensively in their last game to march to the Knockout. Thus it promises to be a mouthwatering encounter at the Australian capital.

Hales-storm to blow away the Heat wind

Alex Hales has been in the form of his life this BBL season and is one of the main reasons why the Thunder have progressed to the Knockouts even as their Trump cards Daniel Sams (remained injured for most games) and Chris Green couldn’t deliver much. The biggest plus point of Hales’ batting is that it hasn’t been one dimensional in any way. He has hit shots all around the park and the drives, which weren’t a prominent feature of his batting, have been at display quite often.

With 535 runs already in his kitty, Hales, 32 would be looking to at first go past his one highest total of 576 in a single season and then have an eye on Marcus Stoinis’ 705 as three good innings from him can not only fetch him 170 runs but also take thunder to their second BBL title as well.

Alongside Hales, Tanveer Sangha’s form will play an important role too as the teenager, pumped up after the first call up for the senior Australian team, would look to go beyond his limits to get his team past the line against Heat. He has 21 wickets in 14 innings so far getting the tally up could help both his side as well as himself considering that Mini IPL auctions are nearing as well and he could be one of the biggest buys. The availability of Daniel Sams for this game is also going to be an exciting and important addition to the Thunder XI.

Lynnsanity! The need of the hour for Heat

The Heat has been in the mix as the likes of Labuschagne, Mitchell Swepson and Jimmy Peirson have performed in an excellent manner. However, what they would want is the skipper Chris Lynn to get going as well because when he gets going, there is no one better than him at taking the game away from the opposition.

In the entire tournament, Lynn has so far been superb, barring the last game. And with 426 runs in just 11 innings, this is also the most runs he has scored in any BBL season he has played so far. Having said that he hasn’t really been able to play the ‘Lynny’ innings or get on the Lynnsanity mode, where he hits big and also get a lot more runs. His highest score this season is just 69 and therefore a better and bigger inning is expected of him.

Pitch Report

Manuka Oval is a ground that gives everything to a T20 fan, some swing early on, some turn in the latter part of the innings, a true bounce for the ball to come nicely on the bat and that’s all that‘s really required for a perfect game. Thus on this pitch, the thing that matters is the skill of the players and how they execute it.

Weather and Bat Flip

The weather in Canberra is predicted to be a bit on the chillier side with the temperature hovering between 17-21 degrees during the match hours. And with more than 70% cloud cover, swing will be on offer. The team winning the bat flip would look to bowl first without any doubt.

Rahul Dravid's positive culture, a boon for Indian cricket: Paddy Upton

Former India captain Rahul Dravid had been the head coach of the U19 and India ‘A’ teams earlier. He has been credited for the success of a lot of cricketers coming from the same setups and performing for the Indian team. Former India mental conditioning coach Paddy Upton also mentioned how Dravid’s positive culture has helped the players grow. “The culture around an athlete is the strongest influence on a player’s mind. That system and environment is constantly influencing their behaviour and that is created as a result of how senior leaders manage and conduct themselves,” he said. “So if you have a coach and captain who shouts and screams and gets disappointed when someone makes mistake, I will show you a team that is filled with fear of failure. “Conversely for example, the U-19 players that are coming through Rahul Dravid and we are really seeing the benefits of it in the cricket world.” Players like Washington Sundar and Rishabh Pant who played a massive role in India’s success in Australia recently have been coached by Dravid. “For someone like (Dravid) who doesn’t get upset about mistakes, he is allowing mistakes and really freeing mind of the players to express and perform and if they make mistakes, have a good conversation, so there is a equanimity and calmness,” he said. “And that is what then conditions those players’ mind. We have seen in the last Test match (in Brisbane), these youngsters coming in high-pressure situation, I think having come through Dravid is a significant part of their success.”

Australian dressing room not happy with Justin Langer: Reports

Australia suffered a 2-1 defeat against India in the recently concluded four-match Test series at home. Australia won the first Test but lost the second and fourth while the third game ended in a draw. Australia coach Justin Langer has faced some backlash since the defeat. Apparently, some of the players are not happy with Langer’s management style according to a report in the ‘Sydney Morning Herald’. “Dressing-room sources say that over a gruelling summer, Langer’s management style wore thin with some players, who on top of having to live in a bubble for months on end say they have become drained by his intensity and mood swings,” the SMH reported. “…some senior players are frustrated at the atmosphere in the team being brought down by the coach’s shifting emotions and what they see as too much micro-management. They say that has extended to bowlers being bombarded with statistics and instructions about where to bowl at lunch breaks including during the fourth and final Test against India at the Gabba,” the report further read. Though, Langer has denied these claims. “Couldn’t be further from the truth,” adding that “leadership isn’t a popularity contest.” “If players just want someone to tickle their stomachs all the time then I’m not doing my job.” “It’s actually the opposite of what happens. I never talk about statistics to the bowlers, ever. I don’t go to any of the bowlers’ meetings. That’s what the bowlers’ coach is meant to be doing,” he said.

BBL Qualifier: Scorchers and Sixers fight for direct ticket to the final

Two of the topmost teams of the Big Bash League at the league stage, Sydney Sixers and Perth Scorchers will collide in the Qualifier at the Manuka Oval in Canberra to get a direct ticket to the final of the tournament. The loser will have to face the winner o the knockout between Sydney Thunder and Brisbane Heat in the Challenger on the fourth February. With a position in the final at stake, both teams will give their best to grab the place instead of being subjected to the Challenger. Since Sixers are coming on the back of a victory and Scorchers after being beaten by the Brisbane Heat, the Pink brigade is more likely to have greater confidence. However, Scorchers, who eight of their last nine games to reach the second spot in the table cannot be taken lightly what so ever. Moreover, the Orange brigade also has a history of playing the most number of BBL finals in the brief history of the league so far. Sixers will bank on proven talent to deliver One of the most experienced sides in the tournament this year, Sixers would bank on its proven worldwide talent of all-rounders Dan Christian, Moises Henriques and Carlos Brathwaite to take them through to the finals. And it is not for nothing that these match-winners are the aces for the Sixers as all of them in the tournament so far have proven their worth by winning games singlehandedly, from positions, where winning seemed impossible at one moment. Christian has so far scored 252 runs at an average of more than 36 and a strike rate of more than 186. Not only that he has 13 wickets to his credit as well while Brathwaite has taken 15 wickets. Henriques has had an impact in just three innings, scoring 137 runs in them with an average of more than 45. Along with these experienced blokes, the likes of Josh Philippe and James Vince in the batting department and Ben Dwarshuis and Steve O’Kefee in bowling make the Pink team a really dangerous proposition. Jhye Richardson & Colin Munro- Scorchers' main weapons While Stars have experienced all-rounders the team Perth will back their seasoned campaigners too as Jhye Richardson and Colin Munro, the two men with terrific form alongside them. Richardson, who has 27 scalps to his name in this tournament so far has been outstanding in all the matches except the last one, Munro, who has scored 411 runs this season in just 13 innings has a similar story as well as he too failed to impress in the last game. However, one failure does not take away from them the good that they have done throughout the tournament and the way they have carried Scorchers through to the Finals. Hence the team would bank on these two to hit form one more time and get them to the finals. The dryness has increased though with passing time and hence spinners would be getting assistance from the wicket. Weather and Bat Flip The weather has been predicted to remain ideal for playing cricket with at least 25% cloud cover throughout the evening and a mild Northwesterly wind blowing throughout. With the wicket being dry in the day time and swing on offer early on, the skipper winning the flip would look to bowl first.
