New Zealand concluded their T20 World Cup 2024 campaign on a high note, securing a convincing 7-wicket victory against Papua New Guinea in their final Group C encounter at the Brian Lara Stadium in Tarouba, Trinidad.

Opting to field first, New Zealand’s bowlers put on a remarkable performance. Lockie Ferguson, in particular, delivered a sensational spell, bowling four maiden overs and taking three wickets. As a result, Papua New Guinea was dismissed for a mere 78 runs in 19.4 overs.

In response, Devon Conway led the charge with a brisk 35 off 32 balls, including two boundaries and three sixes. Skipper Kane Williamson and Daryl Mitchell ensured a smooth chase, guiding New Zealand to victory in just 12.2 overs.

Here’s the timeline of how NZ vs PNG panned out in Trinidad-

NZ vs PNG Highlights: New Zealand Bowlers Clamp Down, PNG Stumbles

Choosing to field first, New Zealand's bowlers wasted no time in stamping their authority. Tim Southee and Lockie Ferguson delivered early blows, removing Tony Ura for just one run and PNG skipper Assad Vala for six, respectively.

The Kiwi bowlers kept a vice-like grip on the game, allowing no room for the PNG batters to breathe or build momentum. By the end of the powerplay, PNG found themselves teetering at 16/2, their hopes of a strong start dashed by incisive New Zealand bowling.

NZ vs PNG Highlights: Amini and Bau Fight Briefly Before Ferguson Delivers Historic Spell

As spinners Ish Sodhi and Mitchell Santner entered the fray, Charles Amini and Sese Bau saw a glimmer of opportunity to counter-attack.

The pair began to rotate the strike more effectively and took advantage of any loose deliveries, stitching together a 27-run partnership.

However, their resistance was short-lived as Ferguson returned to the attack with a vengeance. He dismissed Amini for 17 and Bau was caught in the deep for 12 off Santner’s bowling.

Ferguson’s relentless attack culminated in an unprecedented four-over spell without conceding a single run, claiming three wickets, and etching his name in the record books for the most economical spell in T20I history. Trent Boult, playing his last T20I, also secured two wickets.

The PNG innings crumbled under the weight of Ferguson’s historic performance, alongside Southee, Boult, Sodhi, and Santner, collapsing to a dismal 78 all out in 19.4 overs.

NZ vs PNG Highlights: Finn, Rachin Depart Early

In response, Finn Allen departed on just the second ball of the innings as he was dismissed by Kabua Morea for a silver duck.

Morea struck again in the fifth over to dismiss Rachi Ravindra for 6 as Kiwis scored 29/2 in the powerplay.

NZ vs PNG Highlights: Conway and Williamson Anchor Kiwi Innings Amidst the Storm

Devon Conway, the rock of the New Zealand lineup, stepped up. His composed 35 off 32 balls provided stability, while Kane Williamson, the skipper, anchored the other end.

Together, the duo weathered the storm and just when it looked like the Blackcaps would sail home comfortably, Conway was trapped in front of the wicket by Semo Kamea.

NZ vs PNG Highlights: Mitchell Keeps Calm and Guides NZ to Win

Despite Conway's dismissal by Semo Kamea in the 10th over, the groundwork laid by the partnership ensured that the chase was well within reach.

Daryl Mitchell then stepped up, adding a brisk unbeaten 19 off 12 balls, injecting momentum at just the right time.

His spirited batting took New Zealand over the line comfortably and secured a victory as they ended their disappointing T20 World Cup 2024 campaign with a win.
