Sri Lanka unleashed a torrent of runs in Match 38 of the T20 World Cup 2024, obliterating the Netherlands by a whopping 83 runs at the Daren Sammy National Cricket Stadium in Gros Islet, St Lucia on Monday.

Despite being out of the running for the knockout stages, Sri Lanka found their groove too late in the tournament, blitzing to an impressive 201/6 with a fearless batting display reminiscent of their glory days.

On the other side, the Netherlands faced a must-win scenario, not only needing a victory but also relying on Nepal to topple Bangladesh to sneak into the Super 8s.

However, their hopes crumbled spectacularly as they folded for just 118 in a batting debacle that spelled their doom.

To add insult to injury, Bangladesh clinched their game against Nepal as the Netherlands' World Cup dreams fizzled out in a haze of what-could-have-beens.

Here’s the timeline of how SL vs NED panned out in St Lucia.

SL vs NED Highlights: Nissanka Departs For a Duck as the Mendis Duo Stablizes The Innings

Sri Lanka's innings commenced on wobbly legs as Pathum Nissanka departed for a silver duck in the opening over, leaving the team in a pinch early on.

Kusal Mendis then joined forces with Kamindu Mendis at the crease. Kamindu dazzled with a brief but brilliant display of strokeplay, contributing 17 runs before his stint ended in the sixth over, leaving Sri Lanka at 45/2 at the end of the powerplay.

SL vs NED Highlights: Kusal and Dhananjaya Dial Up the Pressure

Post-powerplay, Kusal Mendis and Dhananjaya de Silva knuckled down to rebuild the innings. The duo skillfully maneuvered the ball around, capitalizing on every loose delivery to keep the scoreboard ticking.

Their 45-run partnership was a crucial middle-phase scaffold, which Aryan Dutt eventually dismantled by claiming Mendis for a well-made 46 in the 12th over. Charith Asalanka then entered, ready to up the ante.

SL vs NED Highlights: Asalanka, Mathews, and Hasaranga Explode in Death Overs

Following Mendis’ exit, de Silva began to accelerate, only to be caught out deep after crafting a solid 34.

Asalanka then took the reins, unleashing fury with a rapid 46 off 21 balls, propelling Sri Lanka into a strong position before his dismissal in the 18th over.

Despite Dasun Shanaka’s golden duck in his 100th T20I, Angelo Mathews and Wanindu Hasaranga delivered scintillating cameos—30* off 15 and 20* off 6, respectively—to thrust Sri Lanka to a formidable 201/6 by innings’ end.

SL vs NED Highlights: Dutch Openers Set the Stage But Fail To Keep Going

The Netherlands innings began on a high note with the openers putting up a spirited 45-run stand in just 4.3 overs. Max O'Dowd and Michael Levitt looked comfortable at the crease, with Levitt taking the lead.

However, the tide turned dramatically when Nuwan Thushara broke through in the fifth over, dismissing O'Dowd and initiating a significant downturn in the Dutch fortunes. The next over saw Levitt get dismissed by Maheesh Theekshana for 31 off 23 balls.

SL vs NED Highlights: Thushara Led Sri Lankan Attack Tighten the Noose

Following the departure of the openers, the Netherlands' innings took a nosedive from 47/2 to a dismal 82/7.

The Sri Lankan attack, spearheaded by Thushara and ably supported by skipper Wanindu Hasaranga, proved too much for the Dutch, who lost wickets in quick succession.

Captain Scott Edwards tried to anchor the innings with a composed 31 from 24 balls, but even his efforts were thwarted by Thushara. The collapse was comprehensive, leaving the Dutch all out for 118.

Thushara led the bowling honours with impressive figures of 3/24, while Matheesha Pathirana and Hasaranga picked two wickets apiece to dismantle the Dutch batting lineup, bowling them out for 118 and dashing any lingering hopes of progressing to the Super 8s.
