An emotional Trent Boult took the field for the final time in the T20 World Cup arena against Papua New Guinea in the 39th match of the T20 World Cup 2024 at the Brian Lara Stadium, Trinidad on Monday.

A few days ago, following New Zealand's game against Uganda, Boult stunned the cricket world by announcing that the ongoing T20 World Cup would be his last

With New Zealand failing to qualify for the Super 8 stage, their current game against Papua New Guinea will be their final assignment before returning home.

After winning the toss, the Black Caps opted to bowl first. Ahead of the start of the match, all Kiwi players congratulated Boult for his impactful performances with the ball over the years in World Cups. The ICC has released a video of the moment.

Playing his final T20 World Cup game, Boult didn’t disappoint, returning with figures of 2/14 in his four-over spell. His performance helped the Kiwis dismantle PNG’s batting lineup, bowling them out for just 78 runs.

The 34-year-old Boult has taken 34 wickets in T20 World Cups, making him the tenth-highest wicket-taker in the tournament's history.

Boult was released from his central contract two years ago and has only participated in a handful of international matches since then.

As Boult bids farewell to the T20 World Cup, New Zealand will face the challenge of filling the significant void in their bowling attack.

His long-time bowling partner, Tim Southee, who is now 35, also won't be around for much longer. Preparing for this transition period will be crucial, even if Southee remains in contention for the 2026 tournaments.

Though Boult played in the 2023 ODI World Cup and in the ongoing World Cup, it's still uncertain if he will participate in next year's Champions Trophy.
