Explosive West Indies batter Nicholas Pooran took Afghanistan seamer Azmatullah Omarzai to the cleaners in match number 40 of the 2024 T20 World Cup at St Lucia. Locking horns with the speedster in the fourth over of the match, Pooran flogged three sixes and a couple of boundaries in a space of just six legal deliveries.

Fortunately for the West Indies, their merry of run-scoring barrage was also aided with a boundary off a no-ball, five wides and four leg byes as the hosts extracted 36 runs to race to 73-1 by the end of four overs.

Pooran goes big as West Indies levels with Yuvraj Singh

Batting at number three and arriving to the crease following the dismissal of opener Brandon King, Nicholas Pooran blasted three huge sixes and two boundaries off a single Azmatullah Omarzai over inside the powerplay. Notably, the over was also marred by four byes, five wides and a boundary off a no-ball as West Indies reaped 36 runs from the six-ball sequence to level-up with Yuvraj Singh for T20 World Cup’s most expensive over.

Back in 2007 during the inaugural edition of the tournament, Yuvraj launched a young Stuart Broad for six clean hits in a row to become the first batsman in T20I history to smack six sixes in an over.

Interestingly, moments before Nicholas Pooran’s over of madness, the wicketkeeper-batter had a word with his LSG teammate and Afghanistan fast bowler Naveen-ul-Haq while making his way into the crease.

Owing to Nicholas Pooran’s early batting bombardment, West Indies raced to a 92-run powerplay start against Afghanistan’s new-ball attack. At the halfway stage of the innings, the hosts charted 113-2, with Pooran himself smacking 44* of those runs from just 23 balls.
