What is the Indian Premier League (IPL)? In cricketing terms, it is just like democracy. It is run by cricketers, for the cricketers, and of the cricketers. IPL has been the biggest stage for cricketing talent from India and worldwide, made popular by the most famous cricketers from across the world.

With another edition of the IPL 2024 just around the corner and the enthusiasm at its peak, this year can be the last dance for many legends - who played their part in making how big of an extravaganza IPL has become.

There are a few names on everyone's mind — such as MS Dhoni, Ravichandran Ashwin, David Warner, and Shikhar Dhawan — who will hang up their boots after the conclusion of IPL 2024. But this list can be much more thicker than that.

In this article, we at OneCricket will name the top 10 IPL legends who are in the twilight of their careers and could retire from the league after this season.

Players who may retire after IPL 2024

MS Dhoni

The former Chennai Super Kings captain, also called Thala by his admirers, is the most iconic player to have ever played in the IPL. With five trophies, a zillion match-winning performances, and countless memories for his fans, MS Dhoni has almost accomplished everything possible in the league. And it might definitely be Thala's last dance in CSK colours.

Rohit Sharma

One of the most successful captains, Rohit Sharma, will play as a player for the first time since taking on Mumbai Indians (MI)'s reigns in 2013. With the IPL 2024 being Rohit's first season as a batter since becoming the Rohit Sharma we all know, it may become the five-time winning captain's last season in the league.

There have been talks about the former MI skipper migrating to Chennai or Bengaluru, but it is doubtful, considering he's 36. And, after all the sourness received from Mumbai, it would not play for them after IPL 2024.

Ajinkya Rahane

After a steering comeback with CSK in IPL 2023, Rahane regained his place in the Indian setup, but it was cut short after younger names returned. Since then, the former Indian captain's form has been poor; he even had an under-par run in the Ranji Trophy, where he led Mumbai to their historic 42nd title.

Chennai may invest in the 35-year-old batter, who has 4400 IPL runs, in the initial few matches of the forthcoming season. If he underperforms, Rahane could fail to attract any buyers during the mega auction before next season.

Faf du Plessis

Over the years, the RCB skipper has been one of the unsung heroes of the IPL. In the last 5-7 years, du Plessis has brought his best game while playing for Chennai and Bangalore, respectively. Last year, he even finished the season as the most six-hitter with 36 maximums. However, at the age of 39 years, IPL 2024 could be the South African maestro's last year as a player in the league.

Shikhar Dhawan

Shikhar Dhawan is another stalwart in the Indian Premier League. He notably has the second-highest run tally (6617) in the league — just behind Virat Kohli (7263 runs). The left-handed veteran has been leading his franchise, Punjab, since last season, but it would most probably be his last for both PBKS and the IPL, with the former IPL champion almost at the twilight of his career.

Wriddhiman Saha

Saha is one of those cricketers who re-birthed in the league after being picked by the Gujarat Titans franchise. The prolific wicketkeeper, taking advantage of his strengths, has delivered goods for the franchise in the last two seasons. Still, with the mega auction coming after this season, this season may be Saha's last IPL season.

In IPL 2024, GT has two more keepers, along with Wriddhiman Saha, in their arsenals.

David Warner

No other foreign batter has scored more runs than David Warner in the IPL. The Australian legend has played nearly 180 games to smash 6397 runs and won a championship as captain with SRH in 2016.

Warner is the only cricketer to have won IPL's Orange Cap thrice - all of them with the Hyderabad franchise. He is currently with Delhi and is looking to end with another IPL trophy, which could be his last run in the competition.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar

One of the most celebrated Indian seamers and an all-time IPL great, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, has been out of favour for the last one-two year. The SRH pacer has seen a dip in pace and form, one of the prime reasons for his axing from the Indian setup.

Meanwhile, the veteran seamer—who has scalped 170 IPL wickets—has shown zip in his bowling in the last two seasons while playing for SRH. But it could turn out to be Bhuvneshwar's last dance in the Orange jersey.

Mohammed Shami

From winning an IPL trophy with GT in 2022 to finishing the season with the highest run of wickets (28) in 2023, Mohammed Shami has found his major mojo with Gujarat. But the GT team will miss the services of their numero uno pace gun in the upcoming season.

The 34-year-old Shami is currently recovering from his right heel injury, which means he might or might not have played his last IPL season.

Ravichandran Ashwin

The champion off-spinner is the only tweaker on this list. Since last season, Ashwin has been playing and doing superbly well for Rajasthan Royals, which helped him get Indian call-ups for two T20 World Cups and the recently concluded World Cup.

However, the spin wizard has now become more of a run-controlling bowler than a wicket-taker, which could explain why IPL 2024 was Ashwin's last season in the league.
