Pakistan secured its first victory in the T20 World Cup 2024 by defeating Canada by seven wickets on Tuesday at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York.

After losing their first two matches, Pakistan opted to field first, holding Canada to just 106/7. Aaron Johnson stood out for Canada scoring 52 off 44 balls, with only two other batters reaching double digits.

In their chase, Pakistan faced an early setback losing opener Saim Ayub, but Mohammad Rizwan's fifty and Babar Azam's contribution of 33 runs steadied the innings. Pakistan comfortably reached the target in 17.3 overs, marking a much-needed win in their campaign.

Here’s the timeline of how PAK vs CAN panned out in New York-

PAK vs CAN Highlights: Johnson Jolts Pakistan Early But Resistance Fizzles

Aaron Johnson kicked off Canada's innings with a bang, taking Shaheen Afridi for 11 runs in the first over, setting an aggressive tone.

Despite his fiery start, Pakistan's bowling attack soon found their stride and began to tighten the screws.

The bowlers skillfully extracted wickets at regular intervals, effectively putting Canada on the back foot and drowning their hopes in early trouble.

PAK vs CAN Highlights: Johnson's Lone Stand Amidst a Crumbling Lineup

Johnson reached a commendable half-century, shining as a solitary star for Canada, but found little support from his teammates. After his spirited fifty, Naseem Shah managed to dismiss him, extinguishing Canada's flicker of resistance.

The Canadian scorecard was a bleak affair, with only Saad Bin Zafar and Kaleem Sana managing to cross into double figures, scoring 10 and an unbeaten 13, respectively.

Mohammad Amir and Haris Rauf each took two wickets, while Shaheen Afridi and Naseem Shah contributed to the collapse, further dimming Canada's prospects.

PAK vs CAN Highlights: Early Hurdles as Saim Ayub Departs

Pakistan’s innings began on a tentative note, mustering just 20 runs in the first four overs. Saim Ayub struggled to find his rhythm due to a slow outfield and eventually fell prey to Dillion Heyliger.

This early setback slightly rattled Pakistan, but it paved the way for a more calculated approach as they learned from their loss vs India and stabilize the innings.

PAK vs CAN Highlights: Babar and Rizwan Forge a Steady Partnership

With the departure of Ayub, Babar Azam joined Mohammad Rizwan at the crease, and together they knitted a critical 63-run stand for the second wicket.

This partnership became the backbone of the innings, helping Pakistan regain control. However, the partnership was cut short when Babar, after a patient 33 off 33 balls, was dismissed by Dillion Heyliger, leaving Pakistan to regroup once again.

PAK vs CAN Highlights: Rizwan Sees The Team Through

Following Babar’s dismissal, Fakhar Zaman stepped up to the plate. However, in his bid to finish the match with a big hit, he lost his wicket to Jeremy Gordon.

Meanwhile, Rizwan reached a painstaking fifty off 52 balls, marking the slowest half-century by a Pakistani in T20Is.

Despite the slow pace, Pakistan crossed the finish line  with Usman Khan hitting the winning runs. However, the Men in Green didn't finish with flourish they might have hoped for to boost their net run-rate.
