Australia’s rich batting legacy has been defined by a blend of power, precision, and relentless competitiveness. Over the years, their ODI stalwarts have produced some monumental innings that have rewritten record books and showcased the nation’s enduring dominance in limited-overs cricket.

Celebrating Australia’s ODI history, here is a look at five of the highest individual scores recorded by their batters in 50-overs internationals.

5. David Warner – 178 vs Afghanistan, 2015

Australian great David Warner mauled Afghanistan with a 178-run knock from just 133 balls in match number 26 of the 2015 ICC World Cup. Opening the innings with Aaron Finch at the WACA in Perth, the legendary left-hander plundered 19 boundaries and five huge sixes, and mounted a huge 260-run partnership with number three Steve Smith. Warner’s mayhem, coupled with Glenn Maxwell’s 39-ball blitzkrieg in the slog overs catapulted the Australian total to a monumental 417-6, as the hosts crushed Afghanistan by 275 runs.

4. David Warner – 179 vs Pakistan, 2017

Less than two years after decimating Afghanistan, David Warner bulldozed Pakistani bowlers, albeit at the Adelaide Oval in January 2017 during the final ODI of the five-match series between the two sides. Opening the innings with Travis Head, Warner racked up 179 runs from just 128 balls with 19 fours and five sixes to register his new highest ODI score. His partner Travis also cracked a century as the two blistering left-handed openers staged together a 284-run stand, with Australia mounting 369-7 in 50 overs to win the match by 57 runs and seal the series 4-1.

3. Matthew Hayden – 181* vs New Zealand, 2007

Legendary Australian opener Matthew Hayden whacked 181* off just 166 balls against Antipodean rivals New Zealand in match three of the 2007 Chappell-Hadlee Trophy in Hamilton. A prelude to the 2007 World Cup, Hayden flexed his broad shoulders and prolific form by slapping 11 boundaries and 10 huge sixes as Australia reached 346-5 in 50 overs. Unfortunately for the famed opener, Australia lost the match by a wicket in a tight last-over finish owing to run-chase brilliance from Craig McMillan and Brendon McCullum.

2. Shane Watson – 185* vs Bangladesh, 2011

In the second ODI from Australia’s tour of Bangladesh in April 2011, then opener and legendary all-rounder Shane Watson muscled 185* runs off just 96 balls. Chasing 230 for a win to secure an unassailable lead in the series, Watson whacked 15 fours and 15 sixes to light up Australia’s innings. His thunderous knock helped Australia gun down Bangladesh’s total in just 26 overs with nine wickets to spare. Shane Watson’s batting masterclass also turned out to be the highest individual score by any Australian batter in ODIs for over a decade.

1. Glenn Maxwell – 201* vs Afghanistan, 2023

On November 7, 2023; Glenn Maxwell unfurled an innings for the ages by defying logic, cramps and an all-firing squadron of Afghanistan spinners. Taking centerstage at the iconic Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai in match number 39 of the 2023 ICC World Cup, Maxwell tonked 201* runs off just 128 balls while batting at number six. Slipping to 49-4, and eventually to 91-7 in a tall chase of 292 runs, the legendary middle-order batter staged an unbroken 202-run partnership with captain and tailender Pat Cummins, where the latter chipped in with just 12*.

Glenn Maxwell’s pain-marred knock helped Australia clinch a thrilling three-wicket win, and it also marked the first-ever double century in the history of an ODI run-chase, and the first by any Australian cricketer so far in the format.
