Seven-time World Cup champions, the Australian Women's Cricket team have been ruthless, especially in ODI cricket. Since the long history of women's cricket, the Australian women's team have dominated the sport with their top-class lineup and high-quality tactics.
In the recent game between India and Australia, the hosts, the Women in Blue, registered a heavy win over the Kangaroos ' side. Therefore, in this article, we will look at Australian women's biggest defeats in terms of runs in ODI cricket.
5) 82 Runs Vs New Zealand Women, Lincoln, 2008
Leading the way in 2008, the Australian Women's side were touring New Zealand when they were playing at Bert Sutcliffe Oval in Lincoln. It was the second match of the series where the New Zealand Women's side batted first and put up a decent total of 238 runs on the board for the loss of seven wickets, with Nicola Browne and Amy Satterthwaite both putting up 48 runs each.
In reply, the Australian side folded for just 156 thanks to an outstanding bowling effort from the Kiwi bowlers, where Lucy Doolan grabbed three wickets. At the same time, Helen Watson and Sophie Devine picked two apiece to dismantle the Australian women's lineup and register a comprehensive victory by 82 runs.
4) 84 Runs Vs South Africa Women, North Sydney, 2024
The fourth biggest margin of defeat the Australian women endured was against the South African women, last year in 2024, when they were playing at North Sydney in the second ODI of the series. In this encounter, the South African women's side smashed 229 after playing 45 overs, considering the game was shortened due to rain, where Marizanne Kapp displayed her class, scoring 75 off 87 deliveries.
In return, the Australian side were locked out for just 149, again thanks to Kapp, who displayed another brilliant show, but this time with the ball, picking three wickets for 12 runs in five overs. On the back of Kapp's all-round performance, the South African women registered a massive win by 84 runs after DLS was implemented.
3) 88 Runs Vs India Women, Chennai, 2004
The third-largest defeat the Australian women have ever faced was against the Indian women's team in the seventh ODI in Chennai during the Australian women's tour of India in 2004. The Indian women's side batted first in this encounter and could only manage 165 for the loss of nine wickets in their 50 overs.
Here, Anju Jain emerged as the top scorer with 39. But who knew that it would prove enough by a mile, as the Kangaroos Women's side folded for a paltry 77, as Amita Sharma and Nooshin Al Khadeer picked three wickets each to knock the Australian women out and register a victory by a massive margin of 88 runs in this encounter. Despite a low score, the Indian women's side defended the total on the back of some excellent bowling as they proved their mettle against the dominating Australian women's lineup.
2) 92 Runs Vs England Women, Birmingham, 1973
The second biggest defeat the Australian team has ever faced in ODI cricket was in the inaugural Women's World Cup in 1973, against the English Women's side at Birmingham. In the 60-over contest where England women batted first, they were able to register 279 runs on the board after the completion of their quota of overs.
England only lost three wickets on the way, with Enid Bakewell scoring 118, while she was very well supported by Rachel Heyhoe-Flint, the skipper of the English team, who scored 64.
Chasing 284 for victory, Australia could only reach 187 for the loss of nine wickets after the completion of 60 overs, losing by a heavy margin of 92 runs, where Mary Pilling, Enid Bakewell, and Sue Hilliam registered two wickets apiece. Jackie Potter emerged as the top scorer for the Australian side with 57, but it was not enough for her side to cross the line, as they lost the game by a huge margin.
1) 102 Runs Vs India Women, New Chandigarh, 2025*
Now, the biggest defeat the Australian women have ever seen in their successful ODI cricketing history came in the recently concluded encounter against the Indian women at New Chandigarh in the second ODI during Australia's women's tour of India. On the back of Smriti Mandhana's 117, India were able to post 292, as they were bowled out in 49.5 overs, while Deepti Sharma's 40 helped their cause further.
Looking to chase down 293 for victory, the Australian side were able to reach only 190, as despite Annabel Sutherland's 45 and Ellyse Perry's 44, Kranti Goud's three wickets took the honours. India won by a mammoth margin of 102 runs, handing Australia their most embarrassing defeat, which is the largest in terms of runs in their ODI cricketing history, as they were bowled out for just 190 in this encounter.
This match was a testament to the fact that even the best can crumble under pressure, despite having one of the most successful histories in sports.
