Mahidul Islam Ankon rescued Bangladesh with a gritty knock against West Indies in the first ODI of the three-match series. Making his ODI debut in the game and arriving to the crease at 79-3 in 22.1 overs, Ankon faced 76 deliveries in the innings amid tumbling wickets from the other end to steer his team past the 200-run mark.

The innings also marked one of Bangladesh’s highest individual scores ever recorded by any batter on ODI debut.

Mahidul Islam Ankon, who played his only Test so far for Bangladesh back in December last year, received his maiden ODI cap in the first match of the series against West Indies in October 2025 at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur.

Apart from debutant Mahidul Islam Ankon, senior pro and number four batter Towhid Hridoy cracked the lone half-century of the innings. The cricketer scored 51 off 90 balls with three boundaries, and forged crucial partnerships with Najmul Hossain Shanto and Ankon.

Rishad Hossain bludgeoned a fiery 13-ball 26 at the death to turbo-charge Bangladesh up to 207. For West Indies, Jayden Seales unfurled the spell of the innings with figures of 3-48. Roston Chase and Justin Greaves also chipped in with two wickets each.
