Jonathan Trott will reportedly part ways with the Afghanistan cricket team as their head coach after next year’s 2026 Men’s T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka. The former England cricketer was appointed to the role by the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) back in July 2022.

During his tenure, the Afghanistan team enjoyed its best World Cup campaign during the 2023 edition in India; and also reached the semifinals of the 2024 Men’s T20 World Cup in the USA and West Indies.

Jonathan Trott to end ACB contract after nearly four years

As reported by the Cricketer, former England batter Jonathan Trott will be leaving his coaching duties for the Afghanistan cricket team next year shortly after the conclusion of the 2026 Men’s T20 World Cup in the subcontinent. His silent exit, anticipated in March 2026; will bring an end to his near four-year association with Afghanistan cricket, considering the seasoned pro joined them as head coach back in July 2022.

Under his tenure, Afghanistan finished sixth at the 2023 World Cup in India by securing four wins from nine games. The outcome also helped them clinch a spot in the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy in Pakistan and UAE. They also reached the semifinal of the 2024 Men’s T20 World Cup in the Caribbean.

As of now, it remains to be seen what’s next for Jonathan Trott in the coaching hemisphere. Before taking up Afghanistan job, the South Africa-born former English batter served as batting consultant for the Scotland team during the 2021 Men’s T20 World Cup in the UAE.

One can assume that after a short break, Trott will likely ply his trade by associating with either another international side or by entering franchise cricket in a prominent league.
