Glenn Maxwell is one of the most destructive batters in world cricket, and whenever he gets going, it is hard to stop him. He has played plenty of memorable knocks over the years, but his unbeaten double century against Afghanistan in 2023 World Cup would forever remain his greatest knock and probably the finest-ever in ODI cricket.
It was a crucial game of 2023 World Cup and Afghanistan were playing well with win over England and Pakistan. A win over Australia would have meant that they take a big step forward towards the semi-final berth and at one point in time they looked set for a big win. The Afghan boys batted first at the Wankhede and scored 291 with Ibrahim Zadran scoring unbeaten 129.
Australia in reply got off to worst possible start as Afghanistan bowlers picked wickets at regular intervals. They were reduced to 91-7 in the 19th over and the game looked done and dusted. Glenn Maxwell was the only recognised batter at the crease and he too was struggling with his right-leg almost non-functional. The batter though unleashed his flurry of shots and kept going despite immense pain as Afghanistan bowlers just could not find answer to his onslaught.
Pat Cummins Provides Perfect Support To Glenn Maxwell
Pat Cummins at the other end also gave good support to Maxwell and the duo started bringing Australia back on track. However, with the kind of risky shots, Maxwell was playing, it looked like he would end up giving away his wicket eventually. The batter though kept hitting his shots, and they kept going into the crowd as Afghanistan were left shell-shocked.
Glenn Maxwell hit 10 sixes in his knock along with 12 fours and brutally destroyed Mujeeb Ur Rahman. His power-hitting antics were so intense that the match that looked out of Australia's hands at one point in time was finished in the 47th over itself with Maxwell hitting two consecutive sixes followed by a four and another winning six to seal the game for his side.
He stayed unbeaten on 201 while Pat Cummins batted for 68 balls to score 12 runs as Australia pulled off one of the greatest heists in the history of cricket.
