During the fixture between Gujarat Giants (GT) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on May 15, Shubhman Gill smashed his maiden IPL ton in emphatic style to power his side to the playoffs. The 23-year-old youngster scored 101 in 58 deliveries which featured 13 fours and 1 six. He launched a scathing attack on the SRH bowlers and spared no one with his ruthless batting.

In the 12th over of the GT innings, Gill smashed Abhishek Sharma for a six over deep midwicket region. Sharma strayed down the leg side and Gill used his bottom hand to good effect to pull it all the way for a six. That was in fact his only six of the match.

During the post-match presentation, Gill reflected on his performance and revealed that the shot that he played against Sharma was one of the most satisfying moments in his innings. He further went on to elaborate that he had cautioned Sharma before the match and advised him to keep it away from his slot. But Sharma ignored his warning and paid the price for his negligence.

"The most satisfying one [stroke] was probably the six off Abhishek [Sharma] because we are childhood friends. I think I told him before the match that, ‘If you bowl to me, I'm going to hit you for six’. That was most pleasing for me," Gill said in the post-match interview.

Gill shares a very close bonding with Sharma as both were a part of the 2018 U-19 World Cup-winning India team and have played together for Punjab in first-class cricket.

Nevertheless, thanks to Gill's maiden IPL ton, GT became the first team in the season to qualify for the playoffs. The Sunrisers, on the other hand, became the second IPL team to get knocked out from the tournament.
