IPL 2025 has been suspended [Source: @mufaddal_vohra/x.com]
The unthinkable has happened. IPL 2025 is officially suspended and the cricket world is still trying to wrap its head around it. What started with whispers of air raid alerts near Dharamshala quickly turned into a full-blown crisis.
Then came the real blow, the PBKS vs DC game was called off mid-way and just like that, the BCCI pulled the plug on the biggest cricket league in the world.
So the big question now is: what will the BCCI do next to save the season?
What Will BCCI Do Now?
The BCCI is now in damage control mode, working around the clock to figure out a Plan B, C and maybe even D.
One option on the table? Resuming IPL 2025 in a September-October window, just like they did back in 2021 when COVID crashed the party mid-season. That window gives them breathing space, both politically and logistically.
Another possibility? Take the IPL out of India altogether. UAE and South Africa are top contenders as they have hosted the league before and offer neutral, secure stadiums with world-class facilities. If things stay tense at the border, this may be the safest bet.
Closer to home, bio-secure bubbles in South and East India could be created in cities like think Chennai, Bengaluru, or Kolkata, well away from sensitive zones. These cities have big grounds, loyal crowds and can handle the heat if given the green light.
Meanwhile, the safe evacuation of international players is the immediate priority. The BCCI will need to rebuild trust with overseas stars, possibly through insurance assurances and clear communication.
If a full-fledged resumption isn’t viable anytime soon, a creative fix could be a mini-IPL or 'IPL Festival' later in the year, a condensed version featuring top teams and marquee players to keep fans and broadcasters happy, and sponsors from jumping ship.
Speaking of which, the money game is real. Sponsorship and media rights contracts worth thousands of crores are in limbo. Expect the BCCI to sit down with Star Sports, JioCinema and major sponsors to rework timelines or negotiate fallback compensation.
Most importantly, nothing moves without the Centre’s nod. The BCCI will be in tight coordination with the Home and External Affairs ministries, reading the room closely on when it’s safe and acceptable for IPL 2025 to resume.
To steer this storm, a task force could be on the cards, roping in ex-players, franchise CEOs, logistics experts and security advisors. They will need to chart a roadmap fast, one that works for broadcasters, franchises, fans and most importantly, the country’s safety.
Who Will Win The IPL 2025 Trophy?
Now that the tournament’s on ice, let’s talk about the elephant in the room: does anyone actually win IPL 2025 if the games don’t resume?
The BCCI has a few options:
- Declare the top-ranked team on the points table as champions (kind of unfair, but technically doable)
- Void the season altogether and say “no winner” for 2025
- Wait it out and resume the tournament later, maybe in a safer window or at a neutral venue
It’s the ultimate “wait and watch” scenario. But for now, the trophy sits in limbo just like the tournament itself. So as things stand, the IPL is on hold. The trophy is up in the air. And the cricketing world watches, waiting for calm before the storm resumes, if it ever does.
