The inevitable happened and the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 was suspended for one week due to the ongoing war-like situation between India and Pakistan. The suspension came after the Punjab Kings Vs Delhi Capitals match on Thursday was abandoned in Dharamsala.
The decision was taken by the IPL Governing Council after due consultation with all key stakeholders following the representations from most of the franchisees and if all goes well, the league will commence next week onwards.
However, some of the franchises could face a massive jolt as the Australian and South African players could potentially miss the remainder of the series and here's why.
Why WTC bound players could miss remainder of IPL?
The IPL was set to end on May 25, but now, with the tournament delayed for another week, the finale is likely to take place on June 1. However, prior to the WTC finale, which commences on June 11, South African Test team is likely to play a one-off Test with Zimbabwe, in order to get used to the tricky English conditions and the match will take place in the first week of June.
In this scenario, several South African and Australian stars, who are in playoff contentions like Marco Jansen, Kagiso Rabada, Josh Hazlewood, and Mitchell Starc could potentially miss the remainder of the IPL in order to play the one-off game and prepare for the WTC finals.
When will the IPL re-start?
The official IPL website stated in a press release that the IPL 2025 will re-start next week, and the decision was taken by the IPL Governing Council after due consultation with all key stakeholders following the representations from most of the franchisees.
