IPL 2025 suspended (Source:@IPL,x.com)
The inevitable has happened. The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 has been suspended indefinitely for one week with just 16 matches left in the league stage. The decision comes in the wake of escalating military tensions between India and Pakistan, marking only the second time in the tournament’s history that the league has been brought to a standstill mid-season.
When Was The Last Time IPL Was Stopped Mid-Week?
In 2009, the league was moved out of India entirely due to the general elections. None of those disruptions match the gravity of the current crisis, which has forced the BCCI to halt the ongoing season abruptly.
Security concerns reached a peak ahead of the match between Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals in Dharamsala, prompting officials to tighten measures in and around the venue. The development has taken fans and players back to the pause in IPL 2021, when the tournament was halted mid-season due to a health emergency of global proportions the COVID-19 pandemic.
Back in 2021, the BCCI was forced to suspend the league on May 4, after multiple breaches were reported in the bio-secure bubble. Positive COVID-19 cases among players and support staff began surfacing around May 2. Despite rigorous protocols, the virus managed to invade team environments, making it impossible to carry on.
At the time of suspension, 29 matches had been completed in the 2021 season. The remainder of the tournament resumed in September 2021 in the UAE under much stricter health and safety guidelines. In comparison, IPL 2025 had already witnessed 58 league matches before it's suspension.
IPL 2025 Points Table Unchanged
It is important to note that as a result of the suspension, the IPL points table has remained unchanged. Punjab Kings are still in third place with seven wins from 11 matches, while Delhi Capitals hold onto the fifth spot with six wins from as many matches.
